TORONTO -- Doug Mirabelli hit a three-run homer off Miguel Batista (9-10) in the sixth inning, and Mike Timlin pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half to help Boston beat the Blue Jays. Manny Ramirez drove in two runs for the Red Sox.
White Sox 9, Tigers 5
DETROIT -- Juan Uribe homered, scored the go-ahead run and drove in three runs, helping Chicago end its five-game losing streak. Jon Garland (9-9) won for just the second time in nine starts since defeating Seattle on July 9, giving up four runs and eight hits in seven innings.
Rangers 5, Twins 4
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Michael Young hit a tying double in the ninth off Joe Nathan (1-2) and Mark Teixeira singled home the winning run with two outs, stopping Minnesota's four-game winning streak. Pinch-hitter Justin Morneau had put Minnesota ahead in the top half with an RBI double off Francisco Cordero (3-0).
Athletics 6, Orioles 2
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Mark Mulder (17-4) became the first 17-game winner of the major leagues this season, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings. Eric Chavez and Jermaine Dye both homered for the A's, who won for the eighth time in 10 games to maintain their half-game lead over Anaheim in the AL West.
Devil Rays 6, Mariners 5
SEATTLE -- Tino Martinez hit a two-run homer in the first inning to back Rob Bell (6-7), who allowed two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in seven innings. Martinez, who reached 20 homers for the ninth time, tied Cecil Fielder for 87th on the career list at 319.
Angels 7, Royals 5
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jose Guillen hit a two-run homer and Anaheim won its seventh straight, converting a throwing error by second baseman Desi Relaford into the tying and go-ahead runs. Adam Kennedy was 4-for-4, and John Lackey (11-10) allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Troy Percival pitched a scoreless ninth, becoming the only active major league pitcher with nine consecutive seasons of at least 25 saves.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Marlins 9, Giants 1
MIAMI -- Alex Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to cap a seven-run first inning, and Mike Lowell drove in five runs to help Florida, which won for the eighth time in 11 games and pulled within four games of the Giants, who began the night tied with Chicago for the NL wild-card lead.
Padres 3, Mets 1
NEW YORK -- David Wells continued his road dominance, taking a shutout into the ninth inning and pitching San Diego past the Mets.
The only hits against the 41-year-old left-hander until the ninth were a pair of first-inning singles to Jeff Keppinger and Gerald Williams. The Mets knocked Wells out of the game with two outs on a double by Williams and Richard Hidalgo's RBI single.
Dodgers 10, Expos 2
MONTREAL -- Adrian Beltre hit a grand slam to become the first player to reach 40 home runs this year, and Alex Cora homered and had five RBIs to lead Los Angeles over the Expos. Los Angeles scored eight times in the fifth, its biggest inning of the season.
Astros 4, Phillies 2
HOUSTON -- Lance Berkman and Mike Lamb hit RBI singles in the eighth inning and the Astros used a rare relief appearance by Roy Oswalt to defeat Philadelphia. The Astros won for the seventh time in nine games. Carlos Hernandez pitched seven strong innings for Houston and left with the score tied at 2.
Reds 4, Cardinals 3, 10 innings
CINCINNATI -- Pitching while appealing a 10-day suspension, Julian Tavarez allowed the game-winning run to score in the 10th inning on Darren Bragg's single, which gave the Reds a win over St. Louis.
Braves 6, Rockies 5
ATLANTA -- Rafael Furcal went 4-for-4, including a two-run triple in Atlanta's four-run sixth inning, and Eli Marrero drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh to lead the Braves over Colorado.
Cubs 13, Brewers 4
CHICAGO -- Moises Alou homered twice and had a career-high six RBIs, and Derrek Lee hit a grand slam to send Milwaukee to its seventh straight loss. Chicago won for the sixth time in seven games and opened a one-game lead in the NL wild-card race over San Francisco.
