NOTEBOOK From Eastwood Field

Shirt update: It was the sort of game where fans had to cheer for the pants and not the shirts -- both teams dressed their players in a soft gray jerseys. Mahoning Valley wore white pants; Jamestown was in all gray. Because of the "Shirts Off Our Backs" promotion, the Scrappers wore their road gray shirts. A Victor Martinez (No. 41) jersey brought about $300 while many went for the minimum $25 bid. The Jammers were to dress in their batting practice shirts, but about an hour before the game, they decided to wear their road jerseys too. Despite dressing quite similar, there was no wardrobe conflict after the game began.
Reyes watch: Argenis Reyes singled twice to increase his New York-Penn League-leading hits total to 88. The NYPL record is 108, set in 1999. Reyes needs 20 hits to tie and 21 to break the league standard. The Scrappers have 13 games remaining this season. He needs to average 1.6 hits per game over that span to break the mark. In the second inning Reyes stole second base, his 24th theft of the year. Reyes is now in a three-way tie for the most bases stolen in the NYPL this year.
Gorilla news: Apparently the Eastwood Field cleanup crew threw away the gorilla mascot's head by mistake last month. A replacement was found and he was back in action, entertaining the crowd.
Midget is fit: Larry the Legend and the gorilla competed in a push-up contest. Over 30 seconds, the Legend did 43 push-ups, one more that the gorilla. Later the Legend defeated a fan in the Race Around the Bases competition, making the little man 2-for-2 on the night.
Wild card: The New Jersey Cardinals lead the wild card race with a 34-29 record. Hudson Valley (32-28) is one game behind and the Scrappers (33-31) are 11/2 games off the pace. The Oneonta Tigers (31-30) are two games behind. Likely, before this home stand ends Thursday, the Scrappers will begin to sell playoff tickets.
