Hurray for Hercules
VIENNA -- The Air Force Reserve's 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station conducted a flightline ceremony today to commemorate 50 continuous years of production of the C-130 Hercules cargo plane used by the unit.
The first C-130 prototype was flown Aug. 23, 1954, in Burbank, Calif., and the first production aircraft was flown from Lockheed's Marietta, Ga., facility on April 7, 1955. Since then, about 2,260 of the Hercules aircraft, powered by four turboprop engines, have been delivered to 60 countries, 910th officials said.
The 910th began flying the C-130B in 1981 and converted to the C-130H in 1990. Since 1981, 910th crews have logged about 110,000 flying hours in the C-130, transporting people and cargo throughout the world during peacetime and wartime, officials said.
Water in gasoline
SALEM -- Jason Shinn of Salem-Grange Road told city police Saturday afternoon that he had bought gasoline at Murphy USA, 2869 E. State St., that contained water. Shinn wanted to make a report even though he said the gas station told him it would take care of the damages to his vehicle. Lou Wuckovich of Manor Drive, Columbiana, and other people told police Sunday afternoon that they had all purchased unleaded gasoline at the station and their vehicles all broke down. A worker at Murphy USA today said she had no knowledge of any problem, and a supervisor could not be reached to comment.
Flood damages building
SALEM -- Two adjoining structures on South Broadway Avenue have been closed by the Salem Fire Department after the north basement wall of one building collapsed during recent heavy rains. The fire department said that 313 and 321 S. Broadway contain two apartments and a shop. Firefighters said the basement was propped up Sunday while the occupants removed their possessions.
GED practice tests
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center says it will have General Educational Development practice testing next month. MCCTC is offering the practice test for free and on a walk-in basis from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Educational Resource Center at the Southern Park Mall near Sears and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 3 at the career and technical center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road. Qualified participants need to be at least 18, not enrolled in high school and have an Ohio driver's license or an Ohio identification card. Heritage Day set
SALEM -- The Salem Retail and Business Association will have its Heritage Day 2004 with an antique-car parade from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 25. The festival features food, arts and crafts, displays, children's games, sales in participating stores and hayrides sponsored by the Salem Fire Department. The parade will starte at 11 a.m. and proceed through the downtown to South Broadway Avenue, where the owners will park their vehicles for display. Local clubs, organizations or churches interested in having a booth should contact the chamber by Sept. 17. People interested in entering an antique or classic car in the parade should call the chamber office for a registration form.
