Cop fatally shoots man after chase

COLUMBUS (AP) -- A man was shot by a police officer Saturday after he held up a gun at officers who were following him because he was suspected of trying to rob a business, police said.
Sgt. Brent Mull said medics arrived and transported the unidentified man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Mull said police got a call about 8 p.m. Saturday reporting a suspicious man near a business.
The caller said "it looked like he was going to rob the place," Mull said. "They had seen a weapon. He had something in his clothing and was holding it like it was a gun."
Officers responding to the call saw the suspect a short distance from the business, Mull said. As officers approached him in cruisers, the man took off running.
Officers cut him off with the vehicles, Mull said. Witnesses told police that officers advised the man to get down.
Mull said witnesses reported the man produced a weapon and held it up, and then heard one gunshot from a police officer.
Mull said that the officer who shot the man is a veteran but that other details about him would not be released until the suspect's identity was confirmed.
