YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Urban League is having a graduation for homeownership seminar participants and has scheduled makeup classes for those who need them.
The graduation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the league's office at 1350 Fifth Ave., Suite 300.
Makeups for class two and class three will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the office.
Photography contest
COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a photo contest during the Columbiana Street Fair, Sept. 9-11. The contest is open to amateur photographers with three classes for adults, photographers 14 and older. Adult entries will be judged in a category of any subject, or specific categories of animals or people, and best of show. First-place winners in adult categories and best of show will receive $25, and second-place winners will receive $15. Children 13 and younger will be judged in a separate category with prizes awarded for first-, second- and third-place photographs.
Entry forms are available at the chamber office and at various Columbiana businesses.
Assault charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A mother is charged with felonious assault and domestic violence in the stabbing of her daughter Saturday afternoon.
Police sent Annette Moreland, 41, of West Chalmers Avenue to the Mahoning County jail. Police say she stabbed a daughter, Cierra Berry, no age or addressed provided, twice in the back at the Chalmers address.
Berry was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for what police said were minor stab wounds.
The daughter and a son told police Moreland had been smoking crack and drinking for three days. They told police she "flipped out" about 2:15 p.m. Moreland told police she was trying to stab her son but the daughter got in the way, according to a report.
Police said the woman became violent during the arrest, kicking officers, and had be put in leg restraints.
Self-inflicted wound
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old city youth shot himself in the hand with a gun he found in a South Side yard Saturday.
The youth first told police about 3:45 p.m. that the shooting was a drive-by, but officers saw the gun powder burn on his hand and he admitted the self-inflicted wound, a report said.
The boy told police he found the 9 mm gun in the back yard of an East Boston Avenue home. The gun discharged as he checked to see if it was loaded, police said. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Teen dies in accident
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- An Erie teenager died and three others were hurt when the car they were riding in hit a tree late Friday night.
Shayna Stefanik, 18, of Erie, the front seat passenger, was killed, the Pennsylvania State Police said. The driver, Brandon Garrity, 18, of Erie, and two other passengers, Erin Marks, 18, of Union City, and Anthony Barber, 21, of Erie, were hospitalized, police said.
Police said their vehicle was traveling north on Interstate 79 when the car left the road and went into the median. The car then crossed back over the highway and spun, hitting the tree on the passenger side, killing Stefanik on impact, state police said.
Edwards rally
WARREN -- John Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, will have a rally Wednesday at the Warren Community Amphitheater, near Warren City Hall. Doors open at 11 a.m., and Edwards is expected to speak about 1 p.m. Tickets to the free event are available at the Kerry-Edwards campaign headquarters at 162 High St. Those attending the rally do not need tickets, but tickets do guarantee better placement at the event. Volunteers also will have a sign-making party at campaign headquarters from 8 to 9 tonight.
Watershed residents
CORTLAND -- Applications will be accepted until Oct. 29 for a program to reimburse residents of the Pymatuning-Shenango watershed up to $75 for having their septic tanks pumped.
The watershed includes, but is not limited to, Kinsman, Orangeville, Hartford, Yankee Lake, Brookfield and Hubbard. For more information, contact Amy Reeher at the Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District at (330) 637-2056.
