Teen dies in accident
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- An Erie teenager died and three others were hurt when the car they were riding in hit a tree late Friday night.
Shayna Stefanik, 18, of Erie, the front seat passenger, was killed, the Pennsylvania State Police said. The driver, Brandon Garrity, 18, of Erie, and two other passengers, Erin Marks, 18, of Union City, and Anthony Barber, 21, of Erie, were hospitalized, police said.
Police said their vehicle was traveling north on Interstate 79 when the car left the road and went into the median. The car then crossed back over the highway and spun, hitting the tree on the passenger side, killing Stefanik on impact, state police said.
Volunteer positions
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Historical Society is seeking volunteers to serve as tour guides or to microfilm periodicals.
Tour guides will provide information about the displays to visitors, offer suggestions for future displays, and help design and build those displays.
Microfilming volunteers will work at their own pace and set their own hours.

Courthouse bricks
MERCER, Pa. -- The deadline for memorial and honorary brick submissions to be used as pavers in the Mercer County Courthouse Memorial and Honor Garden is Sept. 3. The bricks will be set the week of Sept. 17. The gardens are located on the north side of the courthouse. Bricks cost $50 each plus $3 tax and may include up to three rows of print, 17 characters per line. Proceeds will be used to maintain the gardens.

Edwards rally
WARREN -- John Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, will have a rally Wednesday at the Warren Community Amphitheater, near Warren City Hall. Doors open at 11 a.m., and Edwards is expected to speak about 1 p.m. Tickets to the free event are available at the Kerry-Edwards campaign headquarters at 162 High St. Those attending the rally do not need tickets, but tickets do guarantee better placement at the event. Volunteers also will have a sign-making party at campaign headquarters from 8 to 9 tonight.
Watershed residents
CORTLAND -- Applications will be accepted until Oct. 29 for a program to reimburse residents of the Pymatuning-Shenango watershed up to $75 for having their septic tanks pumped.

Assault charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A mother is charged with felonious assault and domestic violence after stabbing her daughter twice Saturday afternoon.
Police sent Annette Moreland, 41, of West Chalmers Avenue to the Mahoning County jail. Police say she stabbed a daughter, Cierra Berry, no age or addressed provided, twice in the back at the Chalmers address.
Berry was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for what police said were minor stab wounds.
The daughter and a son told police Moreland had been smoking crack and drinking for three days. They told police she "flipped out" about 2:15 p.m. Moreland told police she was trying to stab her son but the daughter got in the way, according to a report.
Police said the woman became violent during the arrest, kicking officers, and had be put in leg restraints.
Self-inflicted wound
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old city youth shot himself in the hand with a gun he found in a South Side yard Saturday.
The youth first told police about 3:45 p.m. that the shooting was a drive-by, but officers saw the gun powder burn on his hand and he admitted the self-inflicted wound, a report said.
The boy told police he found the 9 mm gun in the back yard of an East Boston Avenue home. The gun discharged as he checked to see if it was loaded, police said. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
