VIENNA -- About 35 Air Force reservists assigned to various units of the 910th Airlift Wing are scheduled to return home this weekend after deployments of varying lengths of time in Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the war on terrorism.
One group of reservists is to arrive at Youngstown Air Reserve Station at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Others are slated to land at the air station at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Ham radio cluboffers classes
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 20/9 Radio Club will offer ham radio classes beginning at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency building, 700 Industrial Road. The course will meet for five consecutive Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Those who pass the test at the end of the course will receive an amateur radio license from the Federal Communications Commission. Conservation districtreschedules meetings
CORTLAND -- The Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District has rescheduled its monthly board meetings to 1 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in its offices at 520 W. Main St. The meetings had been at 7 p.m.
Trumbull County landowners interested in election to the county soil and water conservation district board have until Oct. 6 to submit nomination petitions to the board.
A special election of board members will take place Nov. 10.
Also, the district will be accepting orders for white amur fish through Sept. 27. For more information, call the district at (330) 637-2056, Ext. 101.
Fire that damagedbusinesses was arson
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fire that did about $250,000 in damages to two Tod Avenue businesses last Sunday has been ruled arson, Capt. Alvin Ware, arson bureau commander, said Friday. Ware said pallets behind the businesses, Quality Seating and Super Stitches, were set on fire and the fire spread to the shared roof.
Culvert replacementto force road closure
NORTH JACKSON -- Newton Falls Road between Palmyra Road and Mahoning Avenue in Milton Township will be closed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday while the Mahoning County Engineer Department replaces a culvert. Traffic will be detoured along Mahoning, Duck Creek Road and Palmyra Road, the engineer's office said.
Center receives grantfor mental health
YOUNGSTOWN -- Help Hotline Crisis Center will use a $9,000 grant from the Ridgecliff Foundation of Fairview Park for Operation Local B.R.I.D.G.E.S. -- Building Recovery of Individual Dreams and Goals Through Education and Support -- classes for mental health services clients in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The classes, also led by mental health consumers, run for 15 consecutive weeks. The classes are also funded by the Mahoning County Mental Health Board and Trumbull Lifelines.
Windows broken
BOARDMAN -- Two large windows were broken out at Goodyear Auto Service Center at 418 Boardman-Canfield Road sometime before 6:40 a.m. Thursday, township police said. The windows, which measured 15 feet by 10 feet, were valued at $6,000.
Storms lash Pa.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- For the second straight day, severe storms battered southwestern Pennsylvania with strong winds, rain and large hail.
A line of storms stretching from Washington County north through Beaver County moved into the state, heading northeast, shortly before 5 p.m. By 6:30 p.m. there were widespread reports of downed trees and wires -- the most serious apparently in Butler and Beaver counties -- and power outages.
The storms prompted tornado warnings but no reports of funnel clouds. The National Weather Service said gusts of about 70 mph were reported in areas where radar signatures showed tornadoes were possible.
