NFL ROUNDUP | Saturday's games
Bengals 31, Patriots 3
CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer passed for three touchdowns and set up another with a 48-yard completion to Chad Johnson as Cincinnati scored on its first three possessions. Palmer played only the first half and was 12-of-19 for 179 yards. Tom Brady, New England's two-time Super Bowl MVP, also played a half and was 8-of-13 for 126 yards, with one interception. Rudi Johnson, who rushed 16 times for 76 yards, scored from the 1 to cap a five-play, 69-yard drive that included the long pass to Chad Johnson on the second play of the game. Corey Dillon, traded from the Bengals to New England in the off-season, rushed 11 times for 31 yards.
Redskins 17, Dolphins 0
MIAMI -- Mark Brunell directed two touchdown drives, and Washington controlled the ball for 41 minutes. Miami (1-1) made five first downs -- none in the second half -- and totaled just 98 yards. By the second quarter, the offense was drawing boos from the crowd of perhaps 30,000. Brunell, acquired in an offseason trade to challenge for the starting quarterback job, played four series and led TD drives of 63 and 43 yards to help the Redskins (2-1) take a 14-0 halftime lead. Incumbent Patrick Ramsey led Washington to a score for the first time this preseason, directing a 14-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a field goal to start the second half . A.J. Feeley, seeking to supplant Jay Fiedler as the Dolphins' quarterback, led Miami to three first downs before the opening series ended with a fumble by receiver Chris Chambers. The Dolphins, plagued with bad field position, went three-and-out on their next three possessions before Fiedler took over. For Washington, Clinton Portis and Rock Cartwright scored on 1-yard runs, and Ola Kimrin kicked a 26-yard field goal. Brunell went 7-for-9 for 79 yards. Ramsey was 3-for-8 for 41 yards. Despite making four changes in the offensive line this week, Miami struggled with pass protection, and the running game also sputtered. Travis Minor, who became the starting running back when Ricky Williams retired, rushed for 15 yards in eight carries and is averaging 1.2 per carry in the first two games. Fiedler went 4-for-9 for 41 yards in two series. One ended with a punt, and the other when Fiedler fumbled a snap on a sneak. One of Miami's few highlights was a 49-yard kickoff return by undrafted rookie Fred Russell. Antonio Freeman, signed Monday by the Dolphins, saw action on a handful of plays and made one catch for 19 yards. Feeley had the Dolphins on the move on the opening series before a jarring tackle by Sean Taylor forced Chambers to fumble. The Redskins recovered at their 37, and Portis scored eight plays later.
Titans 16, Bills 15
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Willis McGahee found out what it's like to be the starting running back for Buffalo. McGahee scored in the second quarter after taking over for injured starter Travis Henry, but Tennessee used a 22-yard field goal by Joe Nedney as time expired to beat the Bills. McGahee finished with 11 carries for 28 yards, scoring on a 3-yard run on his second series. Steve McNair went 8-of-11 for 93 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Calico, helping Tennessee (2-0) to its sixth straight preseason victory. McNair played just two series, and was on the verge of capping another scoring drive before Antowain Smith was stopped for no gain on a fourth-and-1 at the Bills' 6. Titans running back Chris Brown, taking over for departed starter Eddie George, had a strong game, finishing with 10 carries for 61 yards. Trailing 15-13 in the final seconds, the Titans turned to Nedney, whose kick slipped just inside the right post as time ran out. Third-string quarterback Jason Gesser set up the score with a 13-play, 61-yard drive in the final three minutes. Nedney also hit from 40 and 42 yards. Henry sustained a rib injury when he was hit hard by Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck while attempting to catch a pass at the Tennessee 20. Favoring his left side, Henry slowly made his way off the field and was carted from the sideline to the Bills locker room. The Bills said Henry had bruised ribs and X-rays were negative.
