NFL PRESEASON Browns look to bounce back today against Lions
Detroit is seeking its second preseason win against an AFC North opponent.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Browns' goal for their second preseason game is simple.
"We're looking for a win -- that's the No. 1 thing," linebacker Andra Davis said.
After failing to score a touchdown in their preseason opener against Tennessee, the Browns want to make a statement at home this afternoon against Detroit. There are few areas where the Browns don't need to improve.
"Defensively, we need to make some improvement," Browns coach Butch Davis said. "I'd like to see a reduction in the penalties. I'd like for us to be much more efficient. I'd like for us to play better in special teams."
That about covers it.
Scouting top picks
The Lions are coming off a preseason win against Pittsburgh in which the starting unit moved the ball well on offense. But they haven't seen much from either of their first-round picks, wide receiver Roy Williams and running back Kevin Jones.
Williams played last week but did not have a pass thrown to him, while Jones missed the game with a hamstring injury he suffered Aug. 4.
"Unless [Jones] pulls a hamstring going up the dormitory stairs I think he's ready to play," Lions coach Steve Mariucci said.
Jones will compete for carries with Artose Pinner, Shawn Bryson and Olandis Gary, who had a touchdown last week, but gained just 2.3 yards per carry.
"I'm ready to be the lead back, but at the same time I still need to learn certain things," Jones said. "I don't know everything Artose knows or Shawn Bryson because they've been in the NFL and in this system for some time."
Lions QBs
Mike McMahon and Rick Mirer likely will get playing time in the first half as Detroit looks for answers at backup quarterback. McMahon was a lackluster 9-for-21 against Pittsburgh and Mirer only threw three passes.
Detroit defensive backs Dre' Bly (hip), Fernando Bryant (hamstring) and Brian Walker (knee) did not play last week and the secondary won't be whole for the Cleveland game either.
"We've had too many defensive players right now that are missing some practice time, missed the first preseason game and may miss the second preseason game," Mariucci said. "Other than that I think we're right on schedule."
Detroit will get a look at tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., who has as many personal fouls as catches in his young professional career.
The Lions passed on Winslow, trading their No. 6 pick to the Browns for the No. 7 pick -- where they selected Williams -- and a second-round pick in which they took Oklahoma linebacker Teddy Lehman.
Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia is looking for more playing time with Winslow and the rest of the offense after a tough outing against Tennessee. He wants to play almost the entire first half today.
"I would like to see our passing game develop a little bit more and, obviously, have more consistency on the field," Garcia said. "That will come with time. We're all getting used to each other."
Trade talks
Browns running backs Lee Suggs and William Green are competing for the starting job and are coming off impressive performances last week. Backup James Jackson has even more at stake.
Jackson is the subject of trade talks with the Miami Dolphins, who lost Ricky Williams to retirement.
Jackson has run well against the Lions in the past -- last preseason he averaged nearly 7 yards per carry.
He knows he would have a better opportunity to play in Miami and said he'll be ready to prove his worth.
"I don't want to ride the bench anymore. That would be hard for me," he said.
