NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP Mets edge Giants on 12th inning error

SAN FRANCISCO -- Dustan Mohr allowed two runs to score when he dropped a fly ball in the 12th inning, and the New York Mets overcame a shaky return by Tom Glavine and a team-record six double plays to beat the San Francisco Giants 11-9 Saturday.
The game featured 10 double plays, 16 walks and three errors. But the biggest mistake was made by Mohr.
Just when it looked as if Giants reliever Kevin Correia (0-1) was going to pitch his way out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam with help from a sharp double play by first baseman Pedro Feliz and catcher Yorvit Torrealba, Mohr's gaffe gave New York the win.
After the first three Mets reached in the 12th, Jeff Keppinger hit a grounder to Feliz, who stepped on first and threw home. Torrealba caught the ball and withstood a collision with David Wright for the double play.
After a walk to pinch-hitter Gerald Williams, Todd Zeile hit a routine fly to right field. Mohr appeared to have trouble with the late-afternoon sun and the ball ticked off his glove for an error. Two runs scored on the play and Zeile was caught in a rundown for the third out.
Mike Stanton (2-5) pitched one inning for the win and Bartolome Fortunato got three outs for his first career save, getting Marquis Grissom on a double-play grounder to end the game with Barry Bonds on deck.
Bonds went 4-for-4 with two walks and three runs for the Giants, who lost for just the second time in 10 games.
Glavine, pitching with temporary front teeth after the taxi he was riding in got into a crash Aug. 10, was not sharp at all. He threw just 50 of 110 pitches for strikes and walked a season-high six, but the Mets' hitters did more than enough to overcome his wild five innings.
Wright had four hits and scored three runs, and Cliff Floyd hit a three-run homer into McCovey Cove for the Mets, who blew three late leads.
Glavine left with a 7-5 lead, but the Giants tied it in the sixth when Bonds hit an RBI double and scored on Mohr's single.
Wilson Delgado's RBI single in the eighth gave the Mets the lead, but Mike DeJean gave it right back in the bottom half.
Braden Looper then blew a lead in the 10th after the Mets went back ahead on Jason Phillips' RBI single. Looper gave up singles to Grissom and Bonds to open the inning and San Francisco tied it on Edgardo Alfonzo's double-play grounder.
Glavine got off to a rough start, falling behind 2-0 in the first inning when Alfonzo doubled in a run.
Glavine pitched to Bonds in the third and that didn't work out either. Bonds hit a shot off the right-field wall that bounced away from Richard Hidalgo, giving Bonds his first triple of the year. He scored on Alfonzo's line single off second baseman Danny Garcia's glove.
The Mets scored two in the fourth on Mike Cameron's RBI single and a double-play grounder by Wright.
Glavine allowed five runs and seven hits.

LOS ANGELES -- Shawn Green hit a grand slam and a solo homer to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Atlanta Braves, snapping Mike Hampton's string of seven straight wins.
Jeff Weaver (11-10) won his fourth consecutive decision in a span of five starts, allowing three runs and eight hits in seven innings. With two outs in the first, he hit three consecutive batters with pitches -- tying a major league record. But he escaped that jam and another bases-loaded situation in the fifth.
Weaver also had two hits, including a single in the sixth to set up a sacrifice fly by Steve Finley that increased the Dodgers' lead to 7-3.
The Braves had the potential tying run at the plate in the eighth after an RBI single by pinch-hitter Julio Franco made it 7-4. But J.D. Drew, who hit a two-run homer in the third, fouled out against Yhency Brazoban.
Giovanni Carrara pitched the ninth for his second major league save and first since 2002. Filling in admirably for All-Star closer Eric Gagne, Carrara retired Charles Thomas and Franco with the bases loaded to end the game.
Gagne got the day off after a three-day span in which he threw 69 pitches and allowed six runs and nine hits over three innings.
Hampton (9-9) gave up six runs and nine hits in 4 1-3 innings, walking three. He lost for the first time since June 29, when Florida beat him 5-4 in Atlanta. He was 0-5 in his first eight starts before ending the drought with a 5-1 win over the Dodgers on May 23.
Things looked bleak for Weaver after he plunked Drew, Chipper Jones and Johnny Estrada. But the right-hander collected himself after a visit from pitching coach Jim Colborn and threw a first-pitch strike to Andruw Jones before retiring him on a foul popup.
The NL West-leading Dodgers also loaded the bases in the first with singles by Finley and Milton Bradley and a walk to Adrian Beltre. Green followed with his second slam of the season, driving a 2-1 pitch into the pavilion seats in right-center. Hampton has allowed 25 first-inning runs in 24 starts, his highest total in any inning this year.
The NL East-leading Braves closed to 4-2 in the third when Marcus Giles led off with a single and Drew drove the next pitch to left-center for his 28th homer -- eclipsing his previous career high set in 2001 with St. Louis.
But Green -- who homered twice in Thursday night's 6-5 loss to the Braves -- got one of the runs back in the bottom half with his 22nd homer. It was the 13th homer allowed by Hampton, who had given up just two in 50 2-3 innings over his previous eight outings.
