Benefit for cancer patient
KINSMAN -- A Christian music benefit and bonfire next Saturday will raise funds to help with the medical expenses of Gene "Mugs" Mullett of Kinsman, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer. The event will begin, weather permitting, at 6 p.m. at the home of Tim and Susan Tricker at 7246 Kinsman Nickerson Road, 11/2 miles east of the Kinsman Square. Picnic food and beverages will be provided. Those attending may bring their own lawn chairs.
Church offers child care
COLUMBIANA -- Midway Church, on Route 46 about one-quarter mile south of Route 11, will offer free child care from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. next Saturday for children from infants to age 11. The Saturday Night Alive event is meant to offer child care in a God-centered setting so parents can go out for the evening. For information, call (330) 482-3135.
Slovak pilgrimage
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Chapter of the Slovak Catholic Federation will host the 11th annual pilgrimage in honor of Our Mother of Sorrows, patroness of Slovak people, Sept. 12 at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, 2757 Lipkey Road, North Jackson. Devotions, which will be in Slovak, begin at 3 p.m. with the recitation of the rosary led by Msgr. Cyril Adamko. Confessions will be heard in Slovak and English in the chapel. Singing of Slovak hymns with combined choirs of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and St. Matthias parishes will precede the 4 p.m. Mass. Dinner will follow in the shrine's dining hall. Dinner tickets are $12 and may be purchased from representatives of Slovak parishes, members of the federation or by calling (330) 782-9126.
Catholic author's seminar
YOUNGSTOWN -- Catholic author and apologist Patrick Madrid will present a seminar, "Where Is That In The Bible?" on Sept. 22 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church on how to explain, defend and share Catholic faith more effectively. The seminar, which will be a Bible-based presentation, begins at 7 p.m. A question-and-answer period will follow. Madrid is founder and publisher of Envoy, a leading Catholic journal of apologetics and evangelization, and the author of several books. Madrid also is the host of two popular EWTN television and radio series: "Pope Fiction" and "The Truth About Scripture and Tradition."
St. Augustine festival
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 614 Parmalee Ave., near St. Elizabeth Health Center, will celebrate the Patronal Festival of St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo on Aug. 29 with a Festival Eucharist at 11:30 a.m. and a Gospel Evensong at 5 p.m. The combined choirs of St. Augustine and St. James Episcopal Church, Boardman, will perform under the direction of James A. Johnson, at the Evensong. After the evening service, the people of St. Augustine will serve dessert.
Cornersburg picnic
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cornersburg Baptist Church, 3898 Tippecanoe Road, will have a music festival and picnic at 5 p.m. Aug. 29. The church's saxophone quartet will perform. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, Norwegian waffles and a grand prize giveaway. There is no charge.
Church hosts storyteller
YOUNGSTOWN -- David Clark, a storyteller and musician, brings his Shaking Hands Tour 2004 to First Unitarian Church, 1105 Elm St., at 7 p.m. Monday. Admission is $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Seniors pay $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Clark has toured America and recently released his ninth album. He has written three books, and his essays have been featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." His weekly column is published in many Southeastern newspapers. Clark, who is in his 40s, grew up in Macon, Ga., and left the city of about 150,000 about 10 years ago and put down roots in the rural cotton country near Cochran, Ga., which has a population of 3,000. David began writing letters to friends about life in his adopted town. These friends encouraged him to record the stories, saying he had an ear for the country folks' vernacular cadences and a gift for revving up a guitar.
