4 to be honored for community service



The area residents have volunteered with and organized several programs.
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Buhl Day is used as a way to honor specific Shenango Valley residents who have made significant contributions to the community.
This year's honorees are Lynda Moss McDougall of Sharon, M. Floy Moreia of New Wilmington and David and Ann U'Halie of Sharon.
McDougall, a Sharon native, has been a 4-H youth program adviser, coordinator of the Quinby Street Service Center in Sharon and earned a Make-A-Difference Day award for organizing a Safe Night USA program in 2000.
She is a member of the ERASE anti-drug coalition, serves as a member of the Sharon Community Court, volunteers with the American Cancer Society, and organizes and cooks Thanksgiving dinner every year at the Mercer County Housing Center.
Moreia is program director at the Shenango Valley Multi-Service Senior Center in Hermitage and planned and implemented Late Start Class at five senior centers. She developed the senior games at St. Bartholomew Church, helped run the county Senior Art Show for 11 years and launched a plant sale program at her church, Lebanon United Presbyterian, 21 years ago.

Ann U'Halie is a teacher in the Sharon City School District and chaired the 1975 Sharon Bicentennial Quilt Committee. She's served on the Sharon Mayor's Committee on the Arts and was instrumental in launching the Friday Night Live concert series in Bicentennial Park.
She's chaired various Buhl Day committees and activities since 1980 and is the official Buhl Day historian.
Her husband, David U'Halie, retired from Mercer County in 1998 after working at Children and Youth Services and Juvenile Probation and is a member of the board of directors and a volunteer for the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell. He is also a volunteer in the Out Patient Surgical Unit at Sharon Regional Health System, and a member of the Sharpsville Service Club, which sees that Santa Claus visits every home in Sharpsville on Christmas Eve.
He has managed the placement and supervision of foreign exchange students for Sharon Rotary and reads to a first-grade class every other week during the school year as part of the Rotary Read Program.
He's a committee chairman for the Boy Scouts and is a recipient of the St. George Medal, the highest honor the Catholic Church bestows to an adult for volunteer work in Scouting. He's also served on the Buhl Day Committee for 24 years.
