Enrollment applications
NILES -- Niles City Schools is accepting applications for open enrollment. Children from any school district in Ohio are eligible to apply to attend Niles schools for the 2004-05 school year.
Enrollment is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to available openings in each grade. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance or refusal by the school district.

School holds 'Tag Sale'
WARREN -- The city school district will hold a "Tag Sale" of miscellaneous surplus items at McKinley Elementary beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 26.
The school, at 1321 Elm Road N.E., closed at the end of the school year as a cost-saving measure. It was built in 1918.
The sale will proceed until all items have been sold. Items priced for sale include bookcases, desks, tables, chairs, etc.
Items will be sold as is and all sales are final.
Only cash will be accepted. Merchandise purchased must be removed from the premises by 3 p.m. Aug. 26.

Kindergarten program
WARREN -- The main site of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will hold a program to prepare children and parents for kindergarten at 2 p.m. on Aug. 25.
"Kindergarten Here I Come!" will offer stories, music and crafts, as well as informational handouts for parents.

Orientation, open house
BRISTOL -- There will be an orientation and open house for all students entering grades K-4 at 6 p.m. Aug. 26, in the Bristol Elementary cafeteria. Any student new to the school district should also attend.
Scrap tire collection
HOWLAND -- The township public works department will collect scrap tires left curbside by 8 a.m. Saturday. Up to eight tires, with rims removed, will be picked up per household. No truck tires will be accepted.
Curbside tire pickup
NILES -- The city will offer curbside pickup of scrap tires in each ward. Tires will be picked up between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day of the collection, with 1st Ward set for Aug. 23, 2nd Ward on Aug. 24, 3rd Ward scheduled for Aug. 25 and 4th Ward on Aug. 26.
A special pickup of any tires that may have been missed throughout the city will be Aug. 27.
There is a limit of four tires per household, and no rims will be picked up.
Tennis courts removed
MINERAL RIDGE -- Four tennis courts located south of the student parking lot behind Mineral Ridge High School have been removed at no charge to the district by Mills Excavating of Mineral Ridge.
Schools Superintendent Michael Hanshaw explained that the courts were put in as a gift when the high school was built, but the district has never had a tennis team. The courts fell into disrepair over the years.
Hanshaw said the areas where the courts were will be filled in with dirt to even the surface.
Woman escapes hospital
YOUNGSTOWN -- Perstephanie Parker, 27, of Griffith Street apparently used a scalpel Wednesday night to cut through leather restraints in an emergency room at St. Elizabeth Health Center and escaped, police said. Parker had been arrested on a theft warrant around 6:30 p.m. and was taken to the Mahoning County jail, where she complained of being dizzy and having chest pains.
A nurse at the jail said Parker's vital signs were poor and refused to accept Parker until she had been checked out by the hospital.
Police took Parker to St. Elizabeth's, where a hold was placed on her. She was discovered missing at 7 p.m.
Senator joins committee
YOUNGSTOWN -- The National Labor Caucus of State Legislators elected state Sen. Robert F. Hagan of Youngstown, D-32nd, to its executive committee.
The national organization's goal is to provide state legislators, who are either union members or union friendly, a forum to share ideas and develop a common working families' state legislative agenda.
Hagan, who's in his second four-year term, was among 11 state lawmakers from several states elected to the group's executive committee.
