ATTEMPTED MURDER Wife fights to recover from wounds to head

The husband's attorney said his client was insane at the time of the attacks.
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) -- A woman who says her husband shot her twice in the head was determined to recover from her injuries so she can watch her two young children grow up.
Amy Rezos said during an interview Tuesday that she feels as if she's been given a second chance and wants to make the best of it.
"I'm going to live life the way I should and be with my kids and give them the best lives I can give them," said the 35-year-old mother of two sons, 6 and 2, at her home in Liberty Township, near Hamilton.
The July 26 attack by Christopher Rezos on his wife was the second of his two physical attacks on her last month, authorities said. The couple are divorcing.
She wore a neck brace and a white cap that covered her half-shaven head, crisscrossed with scars.
Rezos spent eight days in a hospital, where a titanium plate was installed in her head. She also suffered a cracked vertebrae and nerve damage to her left eye, she said.
"There's a lot of guardian angels on me right now," she said. "The good Lord above has kept me here for a reason. I don't know what it is and I'm sure I'll find out one day, but believe me I'm thankful for that every day."
Charges
Christopher Rezos, 35, of Middletown, is in the Butler County jail on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, felonious assault and aggravated burglary. Police said he hid in his wife's minivan and shot her twice in the head as she drove to work, causing her to crash.
Christopher Rezos has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity. He is due in Butler County Common Pleas Court again Sept. 14.
His lawyer, Jerry M. Bryant of Middletown, filed a request Tuesday asking the court to determine whether Rezos is mentally competent to stand trial. Rezos had no history of domestic violence before the attacks on his wife, Bryant said Wednesday.
"One of the sheriff's deputies indicated that he thought it was a total meltdown by my client, totally out of his character," Bryant said.
Authorities said Christopher Rezos attacked his wife in a West Chester Township motel July 2 by beating her with a flashlight, smothering her with a pillow and trying to drown her in the bathtub.
The couple were separated by then. Christopher Rezos posted a $100,000 bond before hiding in his wife's van and shooting her, police said.
She said the two were high school sweethearts and got married in April 1995. Amy Rezos said her husband never had physically abused her before the first attack.
"The whole thing has been a shock, a total shock. I never, ever would have thought he would do something like that," she said.
