AMERICAN LEAGUE
Athletics 5, Orioles 4
BALTIMORE -- Erubiel Durazo hit three homers and drove in all five Oakland runs, and Mark Mulder became the first 16-game winner in the major leagues. It was the second three-homer game of Durazo's career. He singled in his first at-bat and finished 4-for-4. Mulder (16-4) allowed four runs and six hits in eight innings, but gave up only one single over his final five innings.

Santana (13-6) took a shutout into the eighth inning and won his fifth straight start, spoiling Mike Mussina's return from the disabled list. Shannon Stewart went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs for the Twins. Jacque Jones also homered for Minnesota, which sent New York to its third consecutive loss. Mussina (9-7) made his first start since July 6 -- he had been sidelined with a stiff right elbow.

Before the game, the Astros learned Pettitte will have season-ending elbow surgery next week. Beltran finished with two hits and three RBIs. Marlon Byrd and Placido Polanco homered for the Phillies.
