Speeding leads to charges
MERCER, Pa. -- A Cleveland man remained lodged in Mercer County Jail following his arrest for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. Pennsylvania State Police said Demond L. Anderson, 26, was stopped for speeding as he drove west on Interstate 80 in Findley Township around 9:45 a.m. Saturday. Not only was he speeding, but he was driving without a license, police said, adding that about three-quarters of a pound of "high grade" marijuana packaged for sale was found in his vehicle. He was arraigned and jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Illegal immigrants
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police are continuing to nab significant numbers of illegal immigrants trying to pass through Mercer County on I-80. Police caught 65 in a three-day period earlier this month and said they caught 10 more around 6:40 a.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of I-80 just east of West Middlesex. The 10 were in a van stopped for speeding and improper display of a registration plate and all were turned over to federal immigration officials. Police didn't reveal their nationality.
Democratic candidates
FARRELL, Pa. -- Three Democratic congressional candidates will meet with local supporters in a joint appearance at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the New Deal Club at 1059 Emerson Ave. U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel of Abington, Pa., D-12th, who hopes to unseat U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., will join Steven Porter of Wattsburg, Pa., who is running against U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, Pa., R-3rd, and Stevan Drobac of Center Township, who is challenging U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart of Bradford Woods, Pa., R-4th.
Dem plans meetings
SHARON, Pa. -- Democratic congressional candidate Steve Porter of Wattsburg, Pa., will be hosting a series of town hall meetings throughout the 3rd District in August and September. The sessions are designed to give voters in the district an opportunity to learn more about how the recently passed HR 1, which limits the availability of foreign prescription drugs, will affect them.
The first town hall meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the YWCA of Butler, 120 West Cunningham St., Butler. A second will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Sheakleyville Volunteer Fire Department, 3278 Perry Highway. Porter is challenging Republican Phil English of Erie for the 3rd District seat.
Company sues church
WARREN -- A Youngstown production company has filed a lawsuit against St. Demetrios Hellenic Orthodox Church alleging breach of contract.
Atty. Gilbert Rucker filed the lawsuit Tuesday on behalf of Malcolm Kimble of B & amp; M Production, Cabot Street, Youngstown, in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Atty. Dan Letson, who represents the church, could not be reached to comment.
The suit is seeking more than $20,000. According to the suit, Kimble entered into an agreement with the church April 7 to rent the banquet hall on High Street for an entertainment event. Kimble paid $300 to secure the hall for the May 29 event, the suit states. The suit alleges that the church breached the agreement and refused to allow the company access to the hall. As a result of the breach of contract, Kimble has lost money expended in the promotion of the event.
Airport project makes way
VIENNA -- Officials broke ground Tuesday on a $2 million project to repave sections of the airport taxiway used by private planes.
The Federal Aviation Administration is paying for 95 percent of the project cost. Work is expected to be complete by December.
Fire is ruled arson
CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- A porch fire officially was ruled arson, meaning the string of unsolved fires in this Fayette County city since October is now at least a dozen.
Nobody was hurt in Monday's fire, which was reported around 7 a.m.
