WASHINGTON -- Top-seeded Andre Agassi withstood an early challenge from local favorite Paul Goldstein for a 6-4, 6-2 victory at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic on Tuesday.
Agassi, who won last week's Cincinnati Masters, trailed 3-1 before taking the next four games and seizing control of the match.
Goldstein, from Rockville, Md., won the opening game of the second set, but Agassi pulled away by winning the next five games.
Bothered by a hip injury earlier in the summer, Agassi is starting to put together a winning streak during the hardcourt season. A winner of eight Grand Slam events, Agassi has won seven straight matches since losing in the second round to Jurgen Melzer in Toronto.
Other matches
Jan-Michael Gambill beat Steven Koubek 7-5, 6-4, advancing to the second round of a tournament for the first time in four events.
Gambill lost his opening round matches in Newport, Indianapolis and in Cincinnati. He broke Koubek in the first game of the match and again to take a 4-1 lead and was able to hold off Koubek's rally late.
Gambill was down an early break in the second set but surged ahead for good when Koubek sent a backhand into the net to give Gambill a 5-4 lead.
Sixth-seeded Alberto Martin rallied from break down in the third set to beat Wayne Ferreira 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Seventh-seed Cyril Saulnier beat Antony Dupuis 6-3, 6-4.
Other winners from Tuesday included Kristian Pless with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2) win over Brian Baker. Harel Levy beat fellow qualifier Nenad Zimonjic 6-7 (7), 7-5, 6-3.
