Seven will be inducted on Oct. 16.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State will enshrine seven members as its 2004 class of its Athletics Hall of Fame and is adding Denise DeBartolo-York and John York as contributors. The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16 prior to YSU's Homecoming game against Northern Iowa.
The seven individual members who will be joining the YSU Hall of Fame are former football players Chris Sammarone, Randy Smith, Lester Weaver and Angelo Pezzuolo; track and field standout Mona Jackson; former men's basketball player Reggie Kemp and former women's basketball player Donna Djorovic.
All-American
Sammarone (1991-94) was a first-team Associated Press, Sports Network and Football Gazette All-American in 1994 as a center. Weaver, a linebacker, is one of six players in school history to be named a consensus All-American. In 1994, he was named to all five All-America teams. Smith was a first-team Sports Network All-American in 1994 as a kick returner and was a second-team AP All-American as defensive back.
Pezzuolo, who played at Youngstown College from 1951-54, helped lead the Penguins to a combined 14-3 record during his final two seasons.
Jackson had five school records in 1994 setting school bests in the 100, 200 and 400 meters outdoors and the 55 and 200 meters indoors. She was named the 1993-94 Vindicator Female Athlete of the Year.
Kemp was a member of the men's basketball squad from 1988-1993 and finished his career by scoring 1,820 points, the fifth most in school history. He is the last Penguin to average more than 20 points per game, with 21.1 per contest in 1990-91.
Djorovic was a part of the women's basketball program from 1989-93 and finished her career scoring 915 points to rank as one of the top 20 scorers in the program's history. She also grabbed 616 career rebounds to appear in the school's top-10 rankings in that category.
The DeBartolo-York family has played a key role in the development of YSU's athletic programs throughout the years. Both John York and Denise DeBartolo-York have been Penguins supporters for a number of years.
