BOARDMAN -- Firefighters spent the early afternoon hours Monday battling a fire at the Walgreens store under construction at Midlothian Boulevard and South Avenue.
Fire department officials said roofing materials sitting on the newly constructed roof somehow caught fire just before 1 p.m. There was undetermined damage to the roof but no injuries.
Reservists set to deploy
VIENNA -- Thirty-four activated Air Force Reservists assigned to various units of the 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station here were scheduled to deploy to Germany today in support of Operation Joint Forge, part of a NATO-led stabilization force supporting peacekeeping operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Drive-by shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Roberto Rodriguez Lozano, 26, of Himrod Avenue was shot around 12:05 a.m. today while standing in a driveway in the 1300 block of North Truesdale Avenue talking to a friend, reports show. The shots, possibly eight or nine, came from a dark-colored car that drove by, police said. A friend took Lozano to St. Elizabeth Health Center. His condition wasn't immediately available.
2 men face charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chunks of sidewalk stolen from the 500 block of Cleveland Street were found in the bed of a pickup truck on Glenwood Avenue, and police arrested two men around 11:45 p.m. Monday.
Mike J. Bennette, 44, of East Florida Avenue was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and driving under suspension. Gerald B. Gray, 50, of Cohasset Drive was charged with receiving stolen property.
A check of Gray's name through the index operator revealed a pickup order issued in Virginia. The reason for the order wasn't immediately clear. Both men were taken to the Mahoning County jail pending arraignment today in municipal court.
Vending machine damage
STRUTHERS -- Police are looking for those responsible for damage done to vending machines and vehicles at two city businesses. The dollar bill changers on Coca-Cola machines at B.Y. Pools, 3404 New Castle Road, and Bob Cene Park were broken over the weekend and an undetermined amount of cash stolen, police reports say.
A truck, semi-trailer and a van parked at B.Y. Pools also were broken into, the report states, but nothing appeared to be missing. A security camera at Cene Park recorded a man breaking into the vending machines there.
Cops take gun from boy
CAMPBELL -- Police charged a 13-year-old Youngstown boy with receiving stolen property after finding a stolen gun in his pocket. The teenager, who listed a Camden Avenue address, was sleeping at a table in McDonald's restaurant, 691 McCartney Road, Sunday morning when a concerned citizen told police he saw a gun next to the boy.
Police removed the gun, which was hanging out of the boy's pants pocket, before waking him. The boy told police the weapon was a pellet gun, and that he was planning to sell it at a flea market. The gun had been reported stolen by a Wilmette Lane man.
Woman is free on bond
STRUTHERS -- Angela Foster, 26, of Otis Street, Youngstown, is free on $1,000 bond pending her trial on criminal simulation charges. Judge James R. Lanzo set her trial for Sept. 13 at her arraignment Monday in municipal court.
Foster was arrested Saturday in Youngstown on a warrant. She was wanted for cashing two checks totaling $877 that were written on a closed account and allegedly forged in November 2003, police said. Two others charged in the case were arrested in January.
Fight at landfill
POLAND -- Township police are investigating the circumstances behind a fight at the BFI Landfill on State Line Road.
Police say a 51-year-old Alabama man and his son got into a fistfight with a 26-year-old landfill employee Sunday. Reports say the Alabamans told police they were unfairly made to wait before dumping their trucks at the landfill. It is unclear how the fight started. Reports say, however, the landfill employee was struck over the head with a flashlight. No arrests were made.
