SCRAPPERS Reyes delivers win with 2-run single
Argenis Reyes came through again in a 5-3 win over Batavia.
BATAVIA, N.Y. -- The leading hitter in the New York-Penn League delivered once again.
With two outs in the ninth inning and the score tied at 3, Argenis Reyes singled home two runs as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers rallied to beat the Batavia Muckdogs 5-3 on Friday at Dwyer Field.
Reyes has a NYPL-high 71 hits and is batting .317 after his 1-for-3 night.
The come-from-behind win came after the Muckdogs (24-29) led 1-0 in the first inning, 2-1 in the sixth and 3-1 in the seventh.
The Scrappers (27-28) used doubles by Teo Encarnacion and Chris Gimenez, a walk, an error on a fielding play and a sacrifice fly by Brian Finegan in the eighth inning to score twice and tie the score at 3-all.
Roehl gets first win
The third Mahoning Valley pitcher, Scott Roehl (1-0), pitched two perfect innings, striking out three of the six men he faced, to get his first decision of the year.
Brett Parker led off the top of the ninth with a single to center and pinch-hitter Omar Casillas reached when the Batavia first baseman couldn't find the handle on a bunt.
Encarnacion reached on a bunt, but Parker was thrown out at third and pinch-hitter Mike Butia struck out.
After fouling off seven pitches, Reyes ran the count full.
His single to center scored Casillas and Encarnacion for the final margin.
Reyes immediately stole second, his 21st of the season to tie him for second in the league in stolen bases, one off the pace.
Fifth win in six games
Roehl got two ground balls and a strikeout to end the game, sending the Scrappers to their fifth win in six starts.
Batavia got a first-inning home run off Ryan Knippschild, who allowed six hits in five innings.
The Scrappers tied it in the top of the sixth.
Chris Clem drew a one-out walk and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Reyes.
Finegan singled home Clem, but Batavia immediately scored in the last of the sixth for a 2-1 margin.
