Boxer Hopkins awarded $1.79 million in damages
DENVER (AP) -- A federal judge has awarded IBF middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins $1.79 million in damages in a breach-of-contract lawsuit against his former promoter.
U.S. District Judge John Kane also ordered America Presents, Ltd., Hopkins' promoter in the late 1990s, to pay Hopkins' attorney fees, according to court documents made public Friday.
Hopkins was sued by the Colorado-based promoter in February 1999 after Hopkins sought to end their relationship.
The case ended in a mistrial in April 2000 and Hopkins countersued.
Hopkins, who is scheduled to box Oscar de la Hoya next month, has made 18 title defenses and hasn't lost since dropping a decision to Roy Jones Jr. in 1993.
