Cooperative program to benefit Crestview, E. Liverpool schools

COLUMBIANA -- Crestview and East Liverpool schools will have a cooperative program this fall, sharing a teacher for teen leadership classes for eighth-graders.
Crestview Superintendent John Dilling said he and eight other staff members completed a training program for the courses, geared to help pupils with study and life skills.
"It's meant to be a one-on-one setting, fostering relationships between our students and teachers," Dilling said. "We want them to realize we care about what they're doing and where they're headed."
He said elementary Principal Al Cervelo is working on a similar program for elementary pupils, called keystone curriculum.
Both the keystone curriculum and teen leadership are Flip Flippen programs, and more information is available at www.flippengroup.com.
Crestview will serve as a pilot school for the state's kindergarten readiness test. The test will be required of all pupils in Ohio next year.
Crestview has four sections of all-day kindergarten. The kindergarten teachers, the school records clerk and the school nurse will be trained to administer the test.
He said the kindergarten readiness test is part of the No Child Left Behind philosophy of determining early what a child's academic strengths and weaknesses are and then tailoring the curriculum accordingly.
He said the test also will show school officials where the district's programs might be weak.
Dilling said the results of the kindergarten testing will be used not only during the kindergarten school year but also as the various kindergarten classes progress through elementary school.
