SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- Teachers and administrators in the Sharpsville School District met Tuesday to finalize a new contract.
Mike Kalpich, president of the Sharpsville Education Association, said both sides now need to ratify the agreement. Details are not being released. Kalpich said they hope to have it ratified before classes begin Aug. 26.
Earlier this year, both sides accepted a state fact finder's recommendation on salaries and benefits, but there were about three dozen other issues still to be resolved. The district's 82 teachers worked last year with an expired contract and have been negotiating this agreement since January 2003.
Employee found dead
HADLEY, Pa. -- Authorities are investigating the death of an employee of Bucks Fabricating found in the company parking lot.
The Mercer County coroner's office said that Bruce A. Powell, 41, of Greenville Road, Greenville, was found by the company's owner early Tuesday when he came to work. Powell worked alone overnight, according to the coroner's report.
Robert L. Snyder, deputy coroner, said Powell died as the result of injuries sustained in a fall from a semi-trailer loaded with roll-off garbage bins Powell was securing with chain binders.
Snyder pronounced him dead at the scene at 6:34 a.m. Tuesday. An autopsy was being done to determine the exact cause of death. Pennsylvania State Police assisted in the investigation.
Police car auction
NORTH LIMA -- In the market for a used police car? Beaver Township might have what you're looking for.
On Tuesday, township trustees discussed having an auction to sell various items including several used police cars. Police Chief Carl Frost suggested having an auction once he and other township department heads are able to compile a list of what could be sold.
Once trustees approve the event, a date and time for the proposed auction will be announced.
Downtown burglaries
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police are investigating three early morning burglaries at downtown businesses.
Police said a burglar alarm went off at 3:18 a.m. at the House of Music at 1616 East Washington St. Officers found the front door kicked in and the cash register opened.
Police also found the glass door at P.O. Lunch at 9 S. Jefferson St. pried open and broken at 5:10 a.m. The cash register also was opened, and a game machine that had been bolted to a table was gone.
A third burglary was discovered at 5:42 a.m. at the Capitol Grill, 108 N. Mercer St. Police said someone entered through the ceiling, cutting burglar alarm wires before entering. An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the juke box, a computer game and 26 packs of cigarettes were taken.
Inmate's autopsy report
YOUNGSTOWN -- A preliminary autopsy report indicates that Mahoning County jail inmate Samuel Fossesca died of an apparent heart attack, said Coroner David Kennedy.
Fossesca, 63, was awaiting trial on a charge of aggravated murder for the death of reputed organized-crime figure Joseph DeRose Jr. in 1981.
He became ill at the jail Saturday and was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he later died.
Kennedy said a final autopsy report won't be released until after results of toxicology tests are received.
Road improvement plan
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Engineer's Office plans to pave six roads as part of a $1.3 million road improvement program expected to begin this year and continue into 2005.
County commissioners are expected to approve seeking bids for the program today. The state is expected to cover 69 percent of program costs through Issue 2.
The individual projects are: repaving Warren-Sharon Road from Brookfield Avenue to the Pennsylvania state line; widening and paving Sodom-Hutchings Road from Tibbetts Corners Wick Road north to state Route 82; paving Salt Springs Road from state Route 46 east to Interstate 80; paving Warren-Burton Road from state Route 305/534 east to state Route 422; paving and replacing curbs on Larchmont Avenue from Warren city limits north to Perkins-Jones Road; and paving Applegate-Sodom Road/Logangate Road from state Route 7/62 northwest to Loganway-Wick Road.
