Girard school boardlays off eight employees
GIRARD -- The school levy outcome is still undecided here, but that didn't stop the Girard Board of Education from making personnel cuts before school starts for the 2004-05 year.
The board agreed Monday to lay off eight noncertified employees effective Aug. 25. This allows the board to give those employees at least 10 days' notice before they will be laid off. The affected employees are seven bus drivers and one cafeteria cashier.
When asked who the children would rely on to get to school, board member Jamie DeVore stated, "The kids will have to find their own way to school."

Library's recycling binsto be removed in Howland
HOWLAND -- Both recycling dropoff containers at the Howland Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will be removed permanently from its parking lot at 9095 E. Market St. effective Monday.
One container has been available for five years for newspapers and magazines and the other for plastic, glass and aluminum cans. The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, which maintains the containers, said the library asked that they be removed because of increased dumping of garbage, broken glass, trash and hazardous waste, causing unsightly and unsafe conditions in the lot.
Woman reports gang rape
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 24-year-old Champion woman told police she was held against her will and gang-raped at a house in the 500 block of Willis Avenue, where she had been given heroin and couldn't come up with $400 to pay for the drugs.
The woman said she went to the house Sunday with a friend she'd met while both were incarcerated at the Trumbull County jail. She told police that the resident of the house made her call her family several times to try to get the $400.
When that failed, he forced her into the attic and threatened her with a metal pipe, saying, "You take care of these guys or I'll beat your a-- with this pipe," reports show. She told police she then was sexually attacked by five men.
The woman escaped Monday and ran to a house on West Chalmers Avenue, where the resident let her in to call police.
