Fatal crash on I-76
LAKE MILTON -- Helen Brasko, 82, of West Hampton Drive, Austintown, was killed around 2:45 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 76 near the state Route 534 exit when she pulled in front of a car traveling westbound, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post.
Brasko, also traveling westbound and intending to use the 534 exit, pulled onto the berm just past it. She then turned left into oncoming traffic in an attempt to use the crossover, the patrol said. Her car was struck by another car driven by Megan Wolford, 18, of Akron, who had two passengers. The impact killed Brasko and set Wolford's car on fire. Wolford and her passengers were not seriously injured, the patrol said.
Teen faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Keith Black, 16, of Holly Drive, Liberty, was found hiding at a house in the 700 block of Delaware Avenue at 11 p.m. Sunday and arrested on a charge of felonious assault, police said.
Earlier in the evening Black shot at Alan Johnson, 17, of Elm Street, according to police. Johnson was hit in the stomach and taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center, where he was in stable condition.
Johnson's brother told police that they were on Saranac Avenue around 7:30 p.m. when shots were fired from a car. Another witness identified Black as the shooter, reports show.
Alumni picnic reminder
YOUNGSTOWN -- The East High School All Alumni Association reminds those attending the reunion weekend picnic from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Willow Ranch off South Hubbard Road in Coitsville Township that only lawn chairs should be brought to the private park. Grills are not allowed.
Tea at WIC clinic
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership and Mahoning County WIC will sponsor a tea from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway WIC Clinic, 100 Broadway Ave., for breast-feeding mothers and mothers-to-be.
Games, prizes and refreshments will be featured.
Little pilot for a day
VIENNA -- Nine-year-old Anthony Gilmore of Youngstown will be an honorary Air Force Reserve 2nd lieutenant and a Pilot for a Day on Tuesday when he visits the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station.
Anthony, receiving treatment for Sickle Cell Anemia at Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown, will receive a genuine air crew flight suit and other mementos. He also will tour the base and its Life Support shop, use the firearms training simulator and be taxied aboard a C-130 Hercules cargo plane.
Nextel of Solon is financial co-sponsor of the program, which is for children who live with a chronic and/or life-threatening disease or illness.
