SENIOR HOUSING Creekside Commons celebrates grand opening
The building has 23 one-bedroom apartments.
CORTLAND -- A grand opening for the Creekside Commons senior housing project is set for 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at the facility.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, and Mayor Curt Moll will be among those attending the ceremony.
The facility is behind the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 490 N. High St. The church, which donated the land for the project, and the Franklin Foundation of Columbus worked together on the project.
The two groups said their purpose was to bring affordable senior housing to the area. The units are targeted for individuals age 62 and older, and there are certain income restrictions.
Construction began on the 20,000-square-foot facility in June 2003, and residents began moving in this past June. It is now about half full.
Creekside Commons is a one-story building that has 23 one-bedroom apartments and a two-bedroom apartment for the resident manager. Each unit has a front and a back door, a patio and small gardening area. The entire building is handicap accessible with wider doorways, grab bars, emergency call systems, nonslip floor systems and other features that will make it easier for residents to remain in one place as they age. The building also has a large community room, a library, a sun room, craft room and laundry facilities.
The project was funded by a $1.78 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Trumbull County Consortium provided $150,000.
Ed Jakubick of E.S. Jakubick & amp; Associates of Cortland and Doug Weatherby, D.E. Weatherby and Associates, Columbus were the architects. Colonial Management Services of Ravenna is managing the facility.
