WARREN -- A developer is appealing a Cortland Board of Zoning Appeals decision that denied a zone change, which would have allowed multifamily homes to be built off Southdale Boulevard in Cortland.
WAE Corporation, Cheviot Place, Cortland, filed the appeal Thursday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. No hearing date has been scheduled.
The land affected by the zone change consists of two parcels, 2.426 acres and 0.637 acres off Southdale Boulevard, according to the Cortland Board of Zoning Appeals.
Season tickets stolen
WARREN -- Police are investigating the theft of two season ticket packages for this year's Cleveland Browns games. The tickets were inside the desk of city Prosecutor Nick Graham in the Municipal Justice Building and were taken sometime Tuesday, officials said. The tickets were worth $740, reports state.
Guilty in fake coin sales
BROOKFIELD -- A woman accused of selling fake rare coins on eBay has pleaded guilty to five theft-related charges.
Brenda Thomas, 29, of Brookfield, entered the pleas Thursday in Eastern District Court. She faces up to six months on each count, according to Sean O'Brien, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor. Thomas' attorney, Gilbert Rucker, said his client will be sentenced after a background investigation.
Youth Day 2004 set
WARREN -- An event to showcase opportunities provided by area youth organization begins at 11 a.m. Saturday in the area around the Warren Community Amphitheater.
Youth Day 2004 is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, the YWCA, YMCA and the Rebecca Williams Community Center. Displays, demonstrations and activities for young people are planned.
The Warren Fire Department will demonstrate what its pumper truck can do. Cleveland Metro Lifeflight will land a medical helicopter, and its crew will be available to talk to the youths. The city police K-9 unit will perform a demonstration, a member of the Ohio National Guard will participate in the event, and the Trumbull County Chapter of the American Red Cross will show their disaster-response truck and explain how it helps people in need.
Attendees also will be able to watch a giant hot air balloon fill and lift off into the sky at 6 p.m.
The YWCA gymnastics group and the dance and drill teams from the Rebecca Williams Community Center will perform at the Amphitheater beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Lane restrictions on I-80
MERCER, Pa. -- The potential for heavy traffic congestion in the Interstate 80 construction area will exist Saturday and Sunday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.
The eastbound lane will have restrictions between West Middlesex and Mercer.
In addition, between Monday and Aug. 13, lane restrictions are planned in the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-80 because of paving and related activities.
The work may increase congestion and cause traffic to back up within and approaching the work areas, the agency said.
Reservists' mock attack
VIENNA -- Some 40 civilian employers of 910th Airlift Wing reservists will witness a mock terrorist attack and plane fire during a training exercise at the unit's annual Employer Awareness Day on Saturday.
The goal of the event at the Youngstown Reserve Air Station, 3976 King Graves Road, is to increase the awareness civilian employers have of the role Air Force Reservists play in defense of the United States, base officials said.
The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an organization within the Department of Defense with branches in each state, will participate in the event.
Child-porn arraignment
AUSTINTOWN -- A Spring Meadow Circle man has been arraigned on child pornography charges. Wladyslaw "Walter" Piskor, 62, was in Mahoning County Court in Austintown on Thursday to hear charges of pandering obscenity involving a minor, pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material, and possession of criminal tools. No pleas were accepted, because the charges are felonies.
