PHOENIX RESTAURANT Sharon police to investigate contest
SHARON, Pa. -- Authorities want to know what's going on at the Best ASSets Contest being held at the closed Phoenix Restaurant at West State Street and Water Avenue.
Mayor David O. Ryan said he's received a number of calls asking what is going on there, and he's asked police to investigate.
The Phoenix has been closed for an extended period, but a sign appeared in the window about a week ago advertising a Best ASSets Contest on July 31, Aug. 7, 14 and 21.
The sign, which features a drawn silhouette of what appears to be a naked or scantily clad woman, has the name "Donkees" across the drawing's posterior and announced the party begins at 10 p.m. and the contest at 11 p.m.
Efforts to contact James Vournous, owner of the Phoenix, to ask about the contest were unsuccessful. The Phoenix has a liquor license.
Ryan said he doesn't know exactly what kind of contest is being held there or if it might be in conflict with the city's new adult entertainment ordinance that was enacted in April.
That law limits the operation of adult entertainment businesses to a small industrial area off Stewart Avenue.
Among other things, it lists adult entertainment as establishments offering go-go dancers, strippers or topless dancers.
Ryan stressed the city has no indication that the contest at the Phoenix includes any of those activities, but police will investigate, he said.
