Man dies in Lake Erie after falling from boat

SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) -- A man died after he was knocked from a fishing boat in Lake Erie by a wave Wednesday, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said.
John Monheim, 70, of Orrville, was returning from a fishing trip about 3:15 p.m. with three friends when their 27-foot fishing boat was hit by several waves 3- to 5-feet high, said John Wisse, spokesman for the ODNR division of watercraft in Columbus.
Monheim fell out of the boat and slipped under water after he was unable to hang onto a fishing net his friends threw to him. A rescue crew from the Sandusky Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and pulled Monheim, who wasn't wearing a life jacket, from the water, Wisse said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other injuries.
Monheim was taken to Lucas County coroner's office for an autopsy.
It was the fourth boating-related fatality in Ohio this year, Wisse said.
