Fire damages house
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Fire Chief Jeff Scrim said there was about $30,000 damage to 713 Brooklyn Ave. in an early morning fire.
The fire apparently started in a second floor bedroom in the southeast corner of the home.
The Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal has been called to investigate. Scrim said the blaze started at 3 a.m. in the house occupied by Sandra Taylor. The owner was not known this morning.
Fire fighters said a passer-by saw the smoke and helped Taylor, who was passing her children out a second story window.
Firefighters were unsure how many children were inside the house, but Scrim said he believes there were at least three children, ages 14, 10 and 2. He said one or two may have been taken to the hospital for burns, but he had no details.

Road safety project
MORGAN, Pa. (AP) -- A winding road that becomes clogged with commuters and school buses could soon be both straighter and safer, officials say.
South Fayette Township has bought two of the four properties it needs to begin a $1.5 million project to repair and redesign the road, which is the main artery to the South Fayette School District campus.
The suburban Pittsburgh township still needs to buy a home and a Veterans of Foreign Wars post before work can begin, which may happen as early as next summer.
