SCRAPPERS Sipp's pitching topples Auburn
Mahoning Valley pulled to within a game of .500.
AUBURN, N.Y. -- Tony Sipp's strong pitching performance led the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to a 2-1 victory over Auburn Sunday in a New York-Penn League game at Falcon Park.
After snapping a seven-game losing streak Saturday, Mahoning Valley has won two in a row to climb to within a game of .500.
After singling, Argenis Reyes (21-22) scored in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch. His hitting streak is at 22 games after he went 2-for-4.
In the Scrappers' fifth inning, Fenando Pacheco hit a leadoff home run in the fifth inning.
Sipp (1-1) allowed three hits in six innings, struck out nine and didn't walk a batter.
The Scrappers' Chip Southerland worked two innings, gave up one hit and struck out two. Mark Harris pitched a hitless ninth inning for Mahoning Valley to pick up his fourth save.
Despite the loss, the Doubledays (31-9) have the best record in the league and are in first place in the Pinckney Division. The Scrappers trail by 111/2 games.
Mike MacDonald (4-1) of the Doubledays worked eight innings allowed five hits in losing.
Mahoning Valley will go against the Doubledays tonight at 7:05.
