Falls edges Champion with one hit



NEWTON FALLS -- The Newton Falls High softball team made the most of its one hit Thursday.
In a first-place battle with Champion (11-4, 8-2), leadoff batter Courtney Pelyak singled, took second base on a wild pitch and came home on two passed balls as the Tigers won, 1-0.
Winning pitcher Lindsay McCartney struck out eight batters and walked none for the Tigers (8-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Losing pitcher Jaclyn Carpenter (4-2) tossed a one-hitter, striking out nine and walking two.
Girard 8, Liberty 0
LIBERTY -- Girard pitcher Nicole Melfi (4-10) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and held the Leopards to just two hits, striking out four and walking one.
Angela DiPiero had three hits, including a double, and Alyson Moliterno added two hits and a double for Girard (5-12, 2-7 TAC). Morgan Tondo had three hits.
Ryan Williams broke up the no-hitter for Liberty (3-9, 2-6).
Hubbard 8, Canfield 7
HUBBARD -- Brittany McKee's two-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Danielle DeJulio with the winning run for the Eagles (10-3).
Kelly Hudy's four hits included a home run and a double, and she drove in three runs. DeJulio finished with three hits, while McKee and Lynle Cornell had two apiece. Winning pitcher Amanda Taylor (10-3) doubled.
For Canfield (10-6), Nikki Garrett's three hits included a double and two RBIs.
