THE VALLEYS Classical, choral shows abound



The Shenango Valley Chorale will perform with two student groups.
An abundance of classical and choral music dominates the local scene for the next week.
"Music From Around the World" is the theme of Shenango Valley Chorale's annual spring concert. Two performances are planned, the first at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon, Pa., the other at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Hickory High School, state Route 18, Hermitage, Pa.
The 90-member chorale, as directed by Edgar S. Groves, will perform music from Italy, Hungary, Germany, Africa, Israel and America. They will be joined Saturday night by Shenango Area Youth Chorus and Sunday night by Hickory High School Chamber Singers. Both student groups are directed by Julie Freeman, who teaches music at Hickory High.
Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.
Opera performance
Warren Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonic Festival Chorus will perform the Bizet opera "Carmen" at 8 p.m. Saturday in Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. N.E., Warren. Call the orchestra office at (330) 399-3606 for details.
A chorus of more than 40 singers from Mahoning and Trumbull counties will perform excerpts from Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah" at 3 p.m. Sunday in First Presbyterian Church, 256 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren. Admission is free. Members of the church's Motet Choir are part of this group.
Soloists will be baritone Tom Scurich; sopranos Ellen Summers and Rosemary Minghetti; mezzo-soprano/alto Pamela Root; and tenors William Ambert and Craig Raymaley. They will be accompanied by a four-piece brass ensemble and organist.
The concert is part of the church's yearlong bicentennial celebration.
Westminster Triptych will perform works especially for flute, cello and piano at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Westminster College's Orr Auditorium, New Wilmington, Pa. Admission is free.
Pianist Matthew McCright, cellist Susanna Reilly and flutist David Tessmer all met at Westminster College, where McCright was a student-turned-instructor and Reilly and Tessmer still teach.
