PREP SOFTBALL Ursuline clinches share of first Steel Valley title



The Irish can win it outright by beating Warren JFK on Monday.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Maureen Cearfoss (13-3) allowed just three hits -- all in the fourth inning -- as Ursuline High defeated Warren John F. Kennedy 6-2 Wednesday and clinched a tie for the Steel Valley Conference championship.
The Irish (14-3, 4-1 SVC) scored three times in the second inning and three more in the third for a 6-0 lead.
Ursuline plays at JFK (4-10, 0-3) Monday and a win would give the Irish their first SVC softball title.
Courtney Davidson had two singles, an RBI and two steals; Jenna Vrabel had a single and a double, and Natalie Palermo scored twice for the Irish.
Warren Harding 3, Mooney 0
WARREN -- Aramys Patterson hit a two-run triple and Whitney Parson added an RBI triple in the sixth inning for Warren Harding.
For the Raiders (9-2, 3-2 SVC), Eva Sexton (9-2) threw a three-hitter at the Cardinals (14-6, 2-3).
Patterson and Lindsey Provitt each had two hits for Harding.
Chaney 22, Wilson 6
YOUNGSTOWN -- Justine Klopta had a homer, a triple, a single and drove in five runs for the Cowgirls.
Klopta (5-5) also pitched the City Series win for Chaney (6-6, 4-0), which led 12-0 in the first inning.
Gina Guyer added three hits with a triple and four RBIs, while Terra Koontz tripled and Mary Wheland singled three times.
Jennifer Wilson and Mary Nieves doubled for Wilson (1-7, 1-2).
Springfield 6, Jackson-Milton 5
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Christy Warren singled to score pinch-runner Courtney Zemkosky with the winning run.
Warren had four hits and Carolanne Semancik doubled for the Tigers (8-4, 6-2 Inter-County League).
Jackson-Milton (9-9, 4-4) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at 5.
Western Reserve 8, South Range 3
BERLIN CENTER -- A five-run second inning was the key difference for the Blue Devils (11-5, 6-2) in the ICL game.
Katie Harmon (6-3) worked six innings and struck out seven to pick up the win. Quinn McCammon hit two doubles, single and drove in two runs. Olivia Myers hit a pair of singles.
Jessica Spickler hit two doubles and drove in three runs for South Range (4-6, 2-4).
Lowellville 10, McDonald 9
McDONALD -- Carla Blinsky's four hits included a triple, and she drove in four runs for the Rockets (3-9, 1-9 ICL). Blinsky (2-9) also won the game in relief.
Starting pitcher Lauren Wilson had two hits.
For McDonald (0-9, 0-6), Lauren Walls and Lindsey Urban each had two hits.
Mineral Ridge 6, Niles 2
NILES -- In the top of the first inning Chelsea Fridley hit a two-run double and Heather Buckner added a two-run single for the Rams (10-2).
Mineral Ridge scored six times in the first, but Niles (6-8) closed to 6-2 in its half of the frame.
Girard 3, Brookfield 1
GIRARD -- The Indians scored three times in the second inning to wipe out Brookfield's 1-0 lead.
Girard is 4-12 overall and 1-7 in the Trumbull Athletic Conference. Each team had four hits.
Crestview 12, Southern 1
COLUMBIANA -- Jessica Sferra pitched a no-hitter, with seven strikeouts. It was her second no-hitter of the season.
The Rebels scored 10 runs in the first inning. Jen Harroff hit three singles and drove in two runs.
