HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Chaney sweeps City Series title for 15th straight year
The Cowboys had 17 hits to beat Wilson for a 4-0 league record.
YOUNGSTOWN -- For the 15th straight year, Chaney High is the champion of the Youngstown City Series baseball race.
Under first-year coach Tom Otto, the Cowboys used a 17-hit attack Wednesday to defeat Woodrow Wilson, 17-4.
Jeff Shaffo doubled three times while Tom Enyeart had three hits, including a triple.
Aaron Boris tripled and Adam Boris doubled for the Cowboys (11-2, 4-0).
Every starter had at least one hit for the Cowboys, who began their stranglehold on the City Series in 1989 under coach Mike Popio.
Otto played on four of those title teams. He graduated in 1994 and coached under Popio, who retired from coaching last spring.
Fitch 6, Mooney 1
STRUTHERS -- John Mang had three hits, including a double, and scored twice for the Falcons (10-3).
Jeff Kotel doubled and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Mike Brown drove in two insurance runs in the seventh inning.
Winning pitcher Bob Melnek (2-0) went the distance, scattering four hits.
For Mooney (5-10), Joe Irwin had two singles.
Boardman 11, Warren Harding 10
BOARDMAN -- The Spartans (7-8), behind 8-2, scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Dan Ford hit a home run, double, two singles and drove in two runs for the Spartans. Anthony Porter hit three singles and drove in two runs.
Justin Byler hit a pair of doubles and single for the Raiders (10-8). John Flaminio and Willie Sekula each had a home run and three RBIs.
Ursuline 18, Warren JFK 4
WARREN -- The Irish sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning as they took a 12-0 lead. Ed Rohan and Sean Satterlee, who scored twice, each had two hits.
Rohan finished with four singles. He drove in four runs and scored twice for the Irish (8-9). Brad Borghetti hit a pair of doubles and single, drove in four runs and scored three times.
Ursuline's Brett Neely and Andrew Frasco each hit a home run.
Poland 7, Canfield 2
STRUTHERS -- Tom Clayton hit two doubles and a single to spark Poland (9-4, 4-1) in the Metro Athletic Conference game.
Reid Lamport (2-1) pitched a complete game to pick up the win. Bill Christian hit a two-run home run.
Niles 8, Mineral Ridge 1
NILES -- The Red Dragons took a 6-0 lead by the end of the third inning.
In another contest, the Red Dragons rolled to a 11-3 victory over Howland in the Metro Athletic Conference.
Dustin Mostoller scattered six hits to pick up the win for the Red Dragons (9-2) against the Rams.
Kevin Robertson allowed six hits and struck out three for Niles (5-2 MAC) against Howland. Jeff Claar and Mike Conroy each had three hits.
McDonald 10, Lowellville 2
McDONALD -- Mike Van Dyke homered, tripled and doubled and drove in three runs for the Blue Devils (3-6, 3-3 Inter-County League).
James Beedle's two hits brought home two runs. Tyler Stanley (2-2) tossed a three-hitter.
For the Rockets (0-12, 0-7), Steve Pinciaro homered and doubled.
Jackson-Milton 11, Springfield 1
NORTH JACKSON -- Bart McGee had three hits and RBIs, while Steve Bowles and Tim Shaw each had two hits, as the Bluejays (4-10, 3-5 ICL) scored four runs in the second inning and seven in the sixth. Shaw also had three RBIs. He, McGee and Zack Tomaino all doubled in support of winning pitcher Brad Moody, who scattered three hits over the distance.
Brad Adams singled and doubled for Springfield (7-7, 5-3).
Columbiana 6, Leetonia 2
LEETONIA -- Mike Welce and Jeff Rupert each had two hits while Dave Vitko drove in two runs for the Clippers (14-5).
For the Bears (7-9, 4-7 Tri-County League), Kyle Gruszecki had two hits, including a RBI double.
Crestview 8, Southern 2
COLUMBIANA -- Andy Walton's three-run homer helped the Rebels (3-9, 2-5 TCL) score six runs in the fifth inning.
Ken Wagonhouser had tripled and doubled for Crestview. Winning pitcher Craig Schmidt (1-1) had two hits as did Greg Brown.
For Southern, David Vandyne had two hits and a RBI.
