POLAND -- Village officials are inviting residents to participate in a cleanup of Yellow Creek from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15. Volunteers are asked to meet in the College Street Parking lot. Gloves, bags and light snacks will be provided for all volunteers, and the first 50 will be given a tree seedling. YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Alliance of Black School Educators will host a retirement celebration to honor Youngstown city schools Superintendent Benjamin L. McGee. The event, & quot;Beacon of Hope: A Legacy Worth Sharing, & quot; runs from 5 to 11 p.m. May 28 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave.

WARREN -- A program for black women, "The Claim, The Quest, The Challenge," is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Renaissance Place, 1948 Palmyra Road S.W. The speaker is Dr. Deforia Lane, resident director of music therapy at University Hospitals' Ireland Cancer Center. She is also a spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society and has composed and recorded "We Can Cope."

Garage sale to benefitcancer research
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The American Cancer Society will hold a garage sale and flea market Saturday to benefit its annual Relay For Life. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the National Guard Armory at 740 N. Hermitage Road. Vendor tables are $5 per space for individuals and $10 per space for antiques, arts, crafts, produce and flea market vendors.
