Hikers have a choice of covering four miles from Big Bend to New Hamburg, a trip of about three hours, or eight miles from Big Bend to Kidd's Mill Covered Bridge, a trip of about six hours. A car shuttle will be arranged before the hike. Participants should meet at the Big Bend trailhead parking lot at Valley and North Bend roads in Jefferson Township at the eastern end of Shenango River Lake. They are advised to pack water and snacks and to wear comfortable shoes or boots suitable for getting wet. For more information, call (724) 981-2880 or e-mail dpuko@adelphia.net.
A celebration
The I Care House on New Castle's East Side, a project of Slippery Rock University's Institute for Community, Service-Learning and Nonprofit Leadership, held a weeklong celebration last week. The facility is at 602 Court St. The house concept was first proposed in 1997 by SRU students tutoring children in New Castle's east side. The Court Street property was bought with money from the city of New Castle and is in the process of becoming an independent nonprofit organization. The group is dedicated to making community-identified social changes that enhance the quality of life of residents.
From Tinseltown to area
Hollywood filmmaker Stephen Simon made a stop at the New Castle Historical Society on Thursday to talk to community leaders about movie production. Simon was in the region for Slippery Rock University's official announcement of the Harry M. Warner Film Institute, an organization dedicated to the examination and promotion of the impact of film and filmmakers throughout the world cultures. Warner and his brothers opened their first move theater in New Castle, Pa., in 1907. Simon has produced a myriad of well-known films including "Smokey and the Bandit," "All the Right Moves" and "Somewhere In Time."
