PITTSBURGH -- The world premiere of "Springsteen & amp; Seeger" by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Benedum Center, 719 Liberty Ave. Additional performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. next Sunday. British-born choreographer Derek Deane was responsible for the Springsteen segment, which features lyrics and melodies from the songs "Darkness on the Edge of Town," "Secret Garden," "Dancing in the Dark" and "Hungry Heart." Matjash Mrozewski, from Canada, choreographed other dances based on songs by folk singer-songwriter Pete Seeger.
'Mob' film to be shown
YOUNGSTOWN -- "In the Shadow of the Mob," a documentary film by senior production students in Youngstown State University's department of communications and theater, will be shown at 9 p.m. Monday in Bliss Recital Hall. The film focuses on the city's relationship with organized crime and bias against Youngstown. Appearing in the film are YSU history professor Dr. Fred Viehe; Dr. Sherry Linkon of YSU's Working Class Studies program; Atty. Don Hanni; U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th; Mahoning County Prosecutor Paul Gains; and Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich.
Westminster production
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Dr. Jeffrey Bersett, assistant professor of Spanish at Westminster College, has translated and adapted a Spanish playwright's work for Theatre Westminster. "The Baker from Madrigal," which is based on Jose Zorilla's "Traidor inconfeso y martir," will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. next Sunday in the college's Beeghly Theater. Pupils to stage 'Oliver'
CANFIELD -- The musical "Oliver" will be presented by Youngstown Christian School pupils, accompanied by a professional pit orchestra, for four shows at Old North Church, 7105 Herbert Road.
Show times are 11:15 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday and 1:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5 for matinees and all student seating, and $8 for adult evening seating.
Wind ensemble honor
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College Wind Ensemble has been invited to play at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Conference in Erie. Twenty-five groups were chosen to perform out of 150 possible. The ensemble will perform Friday afternoon, just before an address by the state secretary of education. Local musicians in the group are sophomore Jaimee Davis of Warren, Ohio; and junior Jamie Paoletta, freshman Zachary Sartori and sophomore Katie Schultz, all of Sharpsville, Pa.
Youth orchestra concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra will conclude its concert season with an 1812 Extravaganza at 4 p.m. next Sunday at Edward W. Powers Auditorium.
Directed by Stephen Gage and Richard Smrek, the concert will feature Senior Student Concerto Competition finalists Michele Bartos and Katie O'Neill, both of Boardman High School.
The Youth Orchestra will perform Wagner's Rienze Overture and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Also performing will be the Youngstown Symphony Symphonettes directed by Michele Vari and Allison Harris
Graduating seniors will be recognized and the Garnet Klepfer Award will be presented.
