PREP SOFTBALL Boardman completes rally, then falls 2-1 in second game



Struthers erupted for 21 runs to split with Girard.
PICKERINGTON -- Nicole Williams and Ashley DiDomenico drove in the tying and winning runs, respectively, with singles in the eighth inning as the Boardman High softball team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to beat Anthony Wayne 12-11 Saturday in the HUB Tournament.
Boardman lost to Pickerington North 2-1 in a second game.
DiDomenico got the mound win in relief to improve to 9-0.
Melanie Lodyn had a triple and two singles, three RBIs and three runs to key Boardman, while Holly Holman added two singles, two RBIs and two runs. Nicole Williams had two singles and two RBIs, and Danielle Burin three singles, one RBI and two runs.
In Boardman's nightcap, the Spartans allowed both of Pickerington North's runs to score on errors in the last of the seventh inning with two outs.
Meagan Cunningham's double drove in Krysta Sylvester with Boardman's only run in the first inning, after Sylvester walked and was bunted to second base.
Starter DiDomenico took the mound loss for Boardman to fall to 9-1.
Boardman (11-2) was scheduled to play John Glenn today at noon.
Pickerington North is 10-2.
Howland 4, Poland 2North Allegheny 5, Poland 4
HOWLAND -- It's not often that Poland loses a doubleheader, but the Bulldogs fell twice in a round-robin event Saturday.
In a meeting with Metro Athletic Conference opponent Howland for the first time this spring, Poland senior Mallory Conger (8-2) struck out six, but winning pitcher Barbie Lewis (8-2) whiffed three for Howland (8-3, 5-1).
Amy Cornicelli, however, had a single and double and two RBIs for the Tigers (12-2, 4-1). Cornicelli's single was a two-run hit in the fifth inning.
Also for Poland (4-1 MAC), senior Britt Davis had a double and two RBIs.
In the second game, leadoff batter Amy Phillips scored on Heidi Ptacek's single in the bottom of the 10th inning.
To get on base, Phillips bunted, then advanced on Becca Rich's single. Of eight hits for North Allegheny (5-2), Maddie Nester had a single and double, while Dori Nunlay had two singles.
For Poland (12-3), senior Steffi Graf had two singles, including two RBIs that tied the game in the seventh. Freshman Kari Thompson had two hits, and senior Krista Ginnetti had a single and double and scored twice. Freshman Jenna Susany (3-1) struck out five in taking the loss.

GIRARD -- Annie Grischow had two hits and five RBIs in the second game as Struthers (4-9) forced a split with Girard (3-11).
Michelle High, Amanda Ruozzo, Holly Hickenbottom and Teresa Vargin each had two hits for the Wildcats. Ruozzo, a freshman catcher making her first varsity start, added three RBIs.
Meghan Kunzer got the win, striking out nine.
Angela DiPiero had two hits and an RBI for Girard.
West Branch 10, Alliance 1Alliance 13, West Branch 5
BELOIT -- Vana Morgan (2-5) threw a complete-game two-hitter with five strikeouts and went 7-for-8 at the plate for the Warriors (6-9).
Bri Benedict and Evelyn Woods each had three hits in the West Branch win, and Ellie Geiger added four hits with a triple on the day.
Alliance (6-7) scored seven runs in the fourth inning of its win.

COLUMBIANA -- The Blue Devils collected 16 hits on the day and had two pitchers throw complete games, with a total of 18 strikeouts.
Stevie Banks (3-0) won the opener on a four-hitter, while Katie Harmon (4-3) threw a four-hitter in the nightcap for the Blue Devils (9-5).
Harmon had three hits, with a double, in the first game, while Quinn McCammon and Macy Marra each had two hits in the second game.
Southern 14, Wilson 4
YOUNGSTOWN -- Britnie Lutz pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks, and she also slammed a triple and two singles and drove in three runs, to pace Southern.
Sarah Bridge and Chelsee Anderson each added two singles, while Anderson also had one RBI to aid Southern.
Field 4, Mooney 1Massillon Perry 7, Mooney 0Canton GlenOak 4, Mooney 2
MASSILLON -- Stefanie Zizzo collected two singles and a double, while Gina Brunetti and Mara Palombaro each had three hits for the Cardinals (12-5).
Field (10-2) scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning of the opener to wipe out a 1-0 Mooney lead. The Cardinals ended the GlenOak (8-1) game with two runners in scoring position.
