Niles man is appointed to MVSD board
NILES -- City council has appointed James Sylvester of Bonnie Brae Avenue to serve a three-year term on the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District's board of directors.
Sylvester was approved by a 6-1 vote, with Councilman Steve Papalas casting the dissenting vote.
Papalas had nominated Joe Havasi of Bruce Court for the position, but the motion was defeated by a 6-1 vote.
Sylvester will assume the position May 1, taking over for C. William Burgess, who did not seek another term as the city's representative on the board.
Burgess, who has served on the board since 1998, has been council's appointment since the board was expanded from two directors to four.
Sylvester, who also serves as president of the Niles Democratic Men's Club, was one of six candidates interviewed for the position.
The board of directors oversees all expenditures and contracts at the MVSD, which provides water to more than 300,000 customers in Trumbull and Mahoning counties.
