Champion's Karr whiffs 14 in 8-1 win



CHAMPION -- In baseball scorekeeping, it is popular to use the letter "K" to signify a strikeout. It's only fitting then that Champion High School softball pitcher Kasey Karr has the initials KK.
The sophomore threw a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks as the Golden Flashes beat Niles 8-1 Tuesday. It's the first no-hitter this year for Karr (3-1). Emily Hayes led the Champion (7-3, 4-1) attack. She collected a home run, two doubles and a single. Jessica Carpenter also doubled for the Flashes.
Hubbard 5, Girard 0
GIRARD -- Amanda Taylor pitched a two-hit shutout and doubled twice in Hubbard's Trumbull Athletic Conference victory. Taylor struck out five and walked two.
Stephanie Zubyk had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles (5-1, 5-1), while Kelly Hudy and Lynle Cornell added two hits apiece.
Mineral Ridge 4, Springfield 3(10 innings)
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Katie Olive had two hits, including a homer in the eighth inning that gave the Rams (7-2, 5-0 ICL) a 2-1 lead.
Emily Shellar and Sarah Stark also had two hits each for the Rams, who scored twice in the top of the 10th inning. Colleen Platt had three hits for the Tigers.
W. Reserve 7, Lowellville 1
LOWELLVILLE -- Katie Harmon had a double and two RBIs, and Josie Arditi had a triple, double and one RBI to lead Western Reserve.
Macy Marra added a triple and one RBI; McKenzi Mowery a double and one RBI; Quinn McCammon two singles and one RBI; and Leslie Razo two singles to aid the Blue Devils (7-4, 4-2 Inter-County League).
Jackson-Milton 11, McDonald 1
McDONALD -- Krista Kiraly (9-4) scattered four hits as she pitched seven innings to pick up the win in the ICL game.
Rhea Weimer hit a triple and double and drove in two runs, while Kay Bruss hit a double and single and drove in four runs for the Bluejays (9-4, 4-1).
