YSU
Kelly Murphy was named the Horizon League softball pitcher of the week. A sophomore, Murphy went 2-1 with a 0.39 earned run average. In 18 innings, she allowed four hits and struck out 19. For the season, Murphy is 10-7 and has a 0.99 ERA.
Also, two high school seniors have signed letters of intent for next season: Bethany Hafley, an outfielder at Canton GlenOak High School; and Kelli Sheibley, an infielder/pitcher at Colonel Crawford High in Bucyrus.
The soccer team recorded a 7-0-1 record to win the Slippery Rock spring tournament. YSU defeated Slippery Rock II 3-0 in the championship game after beating Slippery Rock I in a shootout in the semifinals.
Thiel
Senior shortstop Caleb Goist (Columbiana) was named Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball hitter of the week. Goist batted .594 (19-of-32) last week with six doubles, nine runs scored and 17 RBIs, as the Tomcats posted a 5-3 record. Goist, a four-year starter, leads the PAC in hits (51), RBIs (35) and doubles (14). He is second in the conference in total bases (68), tied for third in runs (28) and fourth in batting average (.408). Goist is Thiel's career leader in most offensive categories, including at-bats (533), runs (123), doubles (42), hits (195) and batting average (.379).
Washington & amp; Jefferson
Freshman Sam Mann (Howland) was named President's Athletic Conference baseball pitcher of the week. Four weeks ago he was honored as the conference hitter of the week. Mann pitched nine shutout innings for the Presidents in a 2-0 victory over Waynesburg. He scattered six hits, struck out six and stretched his scoreless innings streak to 21.
Westminster
Jennifer Pancake (Boardman), a freshman pitcher and designated hitter on the softball team, was named Presidents' Athletic Conference hitter of the week. Pancake batted .636 (14-for-22), as the Titans registered a 5-2 record. She had a home run, two doubles, seven runs scored and six RBIs.
Mercyhurst
Jen Feret (Boardman), a freshman pitcher on the softball team, was named the college's female athlete of the week. Feret posted a 2-2 record, including a four-hit, 3-0 win over Grand Valley State. Her other win came against Ferris State. Feret pitched 24 innings and gave up three earned runs while striking out 16.
Mount Union
Ronda Barth (Western Reserve), a junior catcher on the softball team, was named Ohio Athletic Conference hitter of the week. Barth went 7-for-16 (.438) as MUC posted a 3-2 record. She also had 10 RBIs and scored four runs. Barth had a career-best six RBIs against Westminster, including a grand slam. Entering this week, Barth led Mount Union (16-14, 7-7 OAC) in batting average (.447), hits (42), RBIs (28), total bases (61) and slugging percentage (.649).
