HUBBARD | City council

Highlights of Monday night's city council meeting:
Street sweeping has been suspended because the street sweeper is broken down. Service director Al Patrick said it's uncertain when the service will resume. The city paid more than $40,000 for the rebuilt sweeper four years ago.
Patrick reported that, weather permitting, the first of two layers of blacktop will be put down Wednesday on North Main and West Liberty streets, except for the south lane of Liberty. A sidewalk is being installed along the south lane of Liberty.
Mayor Arthur U. Magee reported during a caucus session before the meeting that he will have a priority list of projects he wants done in the next five years by the first of May. The mayor is proposing that voters approve an increase in the city income tax by 0.5 percent, to 1.5 percent. This, coupled with elimination of tax credits for those city residents who work out of the city, will generate $900,000 annually, the mayor has said.
Magee said during the caucus session that merging the city and Hubbard Township police departments is a moot issue. He said there are too many legal complications and no state laws regulating the procedure. The Ohio attorney general's office should take the lead in establishing the process. The mayor said he doesn't believe there would be any cost savings in a merger.
