Woman killed; suspect injured
State police are not releasing full details of who wounded the suspect.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A woman was fatally shot after she and her infant were abducted at gunpoint from a church by the child's father, who led police on a 20-mile chase, authorities said.
The suspect was found shot in the arm after crashing at a turnpike toll area Sunday afternoon as police converged on him. State police would not say who fired the shots that struck the pair.
Alvin Starks abducted Andrea Umphrey, 35, of Pittsburgh, and her daughter, Aliya, from Victorious Faith Evangelic Outreach Church, where she is the choir director, police said.
"The guy came in real quick, pulled his gun and punched the woman in the face with it, then pulled her out by the hair," said witness Donald Reid. "He shot one of the brothers in church while everyone was still singing and praising the Lord."
Robert Owens, one of about 130 people at the Pittsburgh church, was grazed by a bullet allegedly fired by Starks. He did not require medical treatment.
"God spared my life and my father's life," Owens said. "That man pointed the gun at my father and pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't go off. Then he turned it on me and shot without hesitation. He wanted his girlfriend and his kid and that was that."
What happened next
Starks sat in his minivan with Umphrey and the infant for about 20 minutes while police secured the area and tried to negotiate. He drove off at 2:45 p.m., leading police through Allegheny and Westmoreland counties before he was stopped near the Monroeville interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike after hitting two vehicles, police said.
"Cops surrounded the van and I heard several shots fired," said Sondra Dugan of North Huntingdon, whose red convertible was struck. She said police pulled Starks out of the van.
Umphrey, who was shot in the abdomen, was pronounced dead at 4:10 p.m. Sunday at Mercy Hospital. State police refused to discuss details of the shootings.
The infant was uninjured and put into the custody of Allegheny County Children, Youth and Families caseworkers.
According to police and witnesses, Starks had threatened Umphrey since the birth of their 10-month-old daughter. Umphrey had obtained a protection-from-abuse order against him, and he had recently been jailed for violating it.
The condition of Starks, who was being treated at an undisclosed hospital, was not available late Sunday. His arraignment was pending, authorities said.
