Retired teachers appeal to Columbiana residents
Retired teachers appealto Columbiana residents
EDITOR:
In view of the anticipated loss of programs and staff members in the Columbiana Village schools for the coming school year, we as retiring teachers urge the community to attend the April 21 board of education meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. at Columbiana High School.
We are concerned about the impact these cuts will have on the students of the district and feel that people need to become informed about the decisions that are being made.
Please attend to gain awareness and to express your concerns.

Public needs to voice its view of marriage amendment
EDITOR:
The voices of "We the People" can be heard.
One of the most critical issues to come before the Senate Judiciary Committee is the Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA), sponsored by Sen. Wayne Allard, R-Colo., Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colo., and now co-sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The letters and articles appearing in this newspaper about gay marriages have been between us and the proverbial fence post. If "We the People" want to make our comments count, we will need to contact Hatch's office. The final draft of the amendment reads:
"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the Constitution of any State, shall be constructed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."
When you call, simply say, "I am John or Jane Doe from Ohio, and I support (or oppose) the Federal Marriage Amendment (S.J. 30)." Your voice of support or opposition will then be passed on to the committee. Your call must be made by May 10.
You can phone, fax or e-mail your opinion. Due to the ricin scare, letters are delayed for weeks. Hatch's office phone is (202) 224-5251; fax (202) 224-6331. The Capitol Switchboard (which will forward your call) is (202) 224-3121. U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, is also on the committee: phone (202) 224-2315 or fax (202) 224-6519. Hatch says he is not hearing from citizens other than gay activists. If you don't make the call, don't complain.

Racial slurs by liberals too often go unchallenged
EDITOR:
I noticed last week in your cartoon strip "Doonesbury," that the strip had our president calling Condoleezza Rice "Brown Sugar." That surely is the last straw for racist comments by the liberal element, wouldn't you think?
Why does the liberal press and media get a free pass when it comes to racial slurs, but when it comes to any conservative even using an inkling of a racial thought, the world comes down on them. Namely, "Jimmy the Greek," Howard Cosell, Rush Limbaugh, to name just a few.
Can you even imagine a conservative using a term like that for a liberal member of the Democrat administration? Why, there would be such a clamor such as the media has never seen!
And if you disagree with my thoughts, I suggest you get a copy of David Limbaugh's book, "Persecution," and after reading that, you just might change your minds.
