PIRATES Versatile Wilson, resurgent Benson help Bucs sweep NY
Pittsburgh earned its first three-game sweep at Shea in 10 years.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Every day, Craig Wilson checks the Pittsburgh Pirates' lineup card and finds his name in it. The only thing that changes is the position.
Wilson started in left field Sunday and finished at first base, where he played the previous day.
He had three hits in each game, including a home run and two RBIs in an 8-1 rout of the New York Mets that completed Pittsburgh's first three-game sweep at Shea Stadium in a decade.
"I don't care where I'm at," said Wilson, who has started six games at first base, four in right field and two in left this season. "It doesn't bother me. The only thing that changes is what glove I wear and where I run on the field."
Wilson hit his fourth home run of the season in the fourth inning and drove in another run in the fifth as the Pirates broke the game open with five runs against Jae Seo (0-2).
Kris Benson (2-0) won for the second time in a week, his first victories since last May 27, allowing six hits in seven innings. Benson, coming off three straight seasons shortened by injury, did not pitch after last July 18 because of a shoulder injury.
Tying the record
Benson sacrificed four times, tying a major league record achieved six times previously, just twice since 1920. The bunts twice contributed to runs.
"There were guys on base every time," he said. "That's the only way it gets done. It's part of history."
Benson had to be more pleased with the victory, his second of the season. In each win, the Pirates have backed him with 17 hits.
"I've had some good games, but this was the best I've pitched this year," he said. "I was getting ahead, not getting into three-ball counts."
A day after the 40th anniversary of Shea Stadium's opening, the Pirates completed their first three-game sweep at the park since June 24-26, 1994.
Taking charge
Pittsburgh scored in the first on hits by Tike Redman and Jack Wilson and an infield out. Craig Wilson made it 2-0 with his leadoff homer in the fourth.
An inning later, the Pirates chased Seo.
With one out, Jason Kendall singled and Raul Mondesi doubled. After Randall Simon was intentionally walked, Craig Wilson singled for a 3-0 lead. Bobby Hill was hit by a pitch, forcing in another run and finishing Seo.
Reliever Dan Wheeler threw a wild pitch for another run and Chris Stynes singled two more home.
New York got a run in the bottom half on hits by Shane Spencer, Kaz Matsui and Todd Zeile sandwiched around a walk to pinch-hitter Jeff Duncan. But Karim Garcia lined into an inning-ending double play.
Mets manager Art Howe said he was glad to get Pittsburgh out of town.
"I knew we were going to lose three in a row at some time," he said. "We're probably going to do it again at some time."
