PREP BASEBALL JFK scores 20 in win over Mooney
Behind the Boros brothers, Chaney's offense was productive against Struthers.
STRUTHERS -- The Warren John F. Kennedy High baseball team had 21 hits in a 20-5 victory over Cardinal Mooney in the Parochial Tournament on Saturday at Cene Park.
Marc Rossi had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Eagles, while Rich Stout added two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored, and T.J. Groner two hits.
Mooney's Shane Gallagher doubled twice and drove in three runs.
Also Saturday, JFK suffered a 14-8 loss to Steubenville Catholic Central, and Mooney lost to Akron Hoban, 17-1.
Walsh Jesuit 12, Ursuline 4
STRUTHERS -- Chris Niro had 10 strikeouts for Walsh Jesuit in the Parochial Tournament. Chris Ziemanski hit a three-run home run for Ursuline.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Adam Boros had a home run and two singles for four RBIs, while twin brother Aaron Boros had two singles for Chaney (7-1).
The Boros brothers and Jeff Shaffo, also a senior, accounted for seven of Chaney's 11 hits in the game won by sophomore Sam Shaffo, who started and went three innings in the five-inning contest.
Jeff Shaffo had two singles and three RBIs. Junior Lou Kopachy knocked in two runs, and Rick Hlinka, a junior, doubled for the Cowboys.
Sam Shaffo (1-0) was replaced by Josh Bartell in the fourth after Chaney had broken the game open.
For Struthers (1-7), cleanup hitter Joel LaRiccia had two singles, while Mike McClure doubled.
Chaney's first-year coach, Tommy Otto, had been an assistant to Mike Popio since 1995. Otto is a 1994 graduate of Chaney.

LEETONIA -- In the opener, winning-pitcher Jay Fiehler and Kyle Gruszecki homered, and Anthony Danko collected a triple.
John Williams and Aaron Valentine doubled for the Bears (5-5) in the nightcap.
The Tigers are 0-5.
Boardman 7, Barberton 5
BARBERTON -- Dan Ford had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Spartans (3-6) past Barberton (4-4).
Mike Evans added two hits and two RBIs for Boardman. Josh Susany got the win, and Armani Johnson the save.
Cleveland St. Ignatius 10, Boardman 8
BARBERTON -- St. Ignatius (8-1) scored seven runs in the first inning en route to the victory. Dan Ford, Cameron Cimino and Matt Madrid each had two hits for Boardman, and Ryan Alford drove in two runs.
Josh Susany was the losing pitcher.
Campbell 8, Warren Harding 7
WARREN -- Anthony Zembillas, Antoni Zembillas, Lonnie McQueen and Craig DiRenzo doubled for the Red Devils (6-3).
A five-run fourth inning gave Campbell an 8-2 lead.
Justin Byler homered and doubled twice for Harding (7-5).
Salem 13, East Palestine 1Salem 13, East Palestine 2
EAST PALESTINE -- Jarin Heath went a combined 6-for-10, with three triples, a double and two singles, four RBIs and five runs scored, to lead the Quakers (7-2).
Salem pounded out 26 runs on 26 hits in the doubleheader, and has now won six of its last seven games.
In the opener, Salem pitcher Bryan Wright earned his first varsity win.
West Branch 11, Jackson-Milton 1West Branch 12, Jackson-Milton 1
BELOIT -- Three West Branch pitchers -- Chad Kitzmiller, Justin Grove and Josh Winans -- allowed just six hits and no earned runs in the doubleheader sweep.
Kitzmiller pitched a complete five-inning game, with five strikeouts and one walk, in the opener, while Grove struck out five in the first four innings of Game 2, with Winans relieving.
The Warrior offense was in high gear, led by Grove with five hits and three RBIs and Tom Orlando with four hits and five RBIs.
Jim King, Andy Todor, John Wallace and Winans each had two hits on the day for West Branch (6-4), which will play six games in the next five days.
Tim Shaw had two of the six hits for Jackson-Milton (0-7).
Mathews 7, Lowellville 2Mathews 16, Lowellville 6
VIENNA -- Ben Mackall had six hits in Mathews' doubleheader sweep. He had three hits and two RBIs while striking out 11 for the opening win.
Paul Belany led the offensive attack in the second game with three doubles and two RBIs. Tyler Stanton added two hits and three RBIs, Drew Turner three hits and Zach Parent two hits for the Mustangs (6-1).
