DVDS Crowe film is out on 2 discs
WASHINGTON POST
This high-seas adventure, based on the popular Patrick O'Brian novels, earned 10 Academy Award-nominations and won two of the statuettes for cinematography and editing of sound. A two-disc collection of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" comes to DVD Tuesday for $39.98. It includes a 28-page booklet and behind-the-scenes footage.
The movie is available without the bonus disc for $29.98.
Russell Crowe stars as Capt. "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, who must choose between duty and friendship.
After his ship is attacked, the mariner gives chase and is determined to capture or kill those responsible for damaging his vessel. He gives little consideration to the human cost of his endeavor.
The movie is set in 1805, Napoleon's era, and is based on at least two of O'Brian's novels. However, director Peter Weir combined elements of the books to create an independent story.
Washington Post movie critic Desson Howe described the PG-13 film as a "fabulous seagoing spectacle."
