SOFTBALL Conger keys Poland in Classic
The Bulldogs went 4-0 to win a division championship.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Senior Mallory Conger hit and pitched the Poland High School team to a 4-1 win over Newport High of Knoxville, Tenn., in the Grand Strand Softball Classic Friday.
The Bulldogs (9-1) went 4-0 in the rain-shortened spring break event, winning its division title.
Conger hit a two-run single in the last of the fifth inning to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
She also threw a complete-game four-hitter to improve her record to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the tournament.
Joining Conger on the all-tournament team was Steffi Graf, who had seven hits, scored seven times and drove in five runs in the four games.
Struthers 4, Fitch 3
STRUTHERS -- Junior Michelle High's double in the sixth inning pushed across Stephanie Sahli with an insurance run as Struthers snapped a three-game losing streak.
Sahli, a sophomore, singled, then went to second on a single by senior Allison Ginnetti.
Junior Meghan Kunzer had a no-hitter heading into the fifth inning when Jessica Reigrut broke it up. Kunzer had one strikeout and walked one batter. Also for Struthers (2-4), sophomore Miranda Polito had two RBIs.
Niles 12, Salem 1
SALEM -- Ashley Byrum had three hits to lead Niles in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Byrum (2-2) also got the win for Niles (3-2, 3-2), while Ashley Lokash, Stacia Ray, Sarah Fenstermaker and Shannon Flody each added two hits.
Krystal Finley had three singles while Brittany Gregory and Stephanie Szaba had two singles each for Salem (2-6, 0-4).
Ursuline 4, Cincinnati St. Ursula 1
TOLEDO -- Maureen Cearfoss pitched a three-hitter and had a two-run single to lead Ursuline over Cincinnati St. Ursula in an opening game of the Toledo St. Ursula Invitational.
Staci Ziobert added a double, single and one RBI for Ursuline (9-0). Cearfoss (8-0) had 10 strikeouts.
Jackson-Milton 3, Reserve 2
NORTH JACKSON -- A shortstop's error on Eric Wilmoth's grounder scored Audrey Robinson in the bottom of the seventh inning with the winning run for Jackson-Milton (6-3, 2-1) in an Inter-County League game.
Prior to Wilmoth's at-bat, Laura Yash was hit by a pitch and a third baseman's error on Robinson's at-bat advanced Yash to second. A pinch-runner for Yash, Jessica Balent, was tagged out trying to score on Carrie Fiol's fielders' choice. JM's Krista Kiraly (6-3) got the victory. Wilmoth is a sophomore. Robinson scored two of the team's three runs.
Mineral Ridge 6, McDonald 1
MINERAL RIDGE -- Kaili Gering (5-0), a junior, struck out 10 and walked two in a three-hitter for Ridge (5-0, 3-0). Of Ridge's 10 hits, Katie Garland had two singles and a double while seniors Sarah Stark and Robin Zimmeran had two hits apiece.
Springfield 9, Lowellville 2
LOWELLVILLE -- Colleen Platt pitched a five-hitter with a season-high 12 strikeouts, and also added two singles and one RBI, to lead Springfield.
Platt was backed by a 14-hit attack. Carolanne Semancik had three singles and one RBI to also pace Springfield (3-3, 1-0), while Courtney Zemkosky contributed a triple and single and Samantha Cavalier two singles.
Hubbard 8, Brookfield 0
BROOKFIELD -- Brittany McKee tripled and Stephanie Zubyk doubled twice for the Eagles (4-0, 4-0) in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game. The Warriors (3-3, 1-2) were held to two singles by Amanda Taylor (4-0).
Champion 11, Liberty 1
LIBERTY -- Sophomore Jaclyn Carpenter struck out 11 and walked two in a two-hitter. Carpenter had four hits, including a double, Emily Hayes had three doubles, Jessica Bova had three hits and Jessica Carpenter had two hits for Champion (4-2, 3-1).
