NEW YORK Pirates subdue Mets, 7-6

NEW YORK (AP) -- With Mets starter Tom Glavine out after throwing just 78 impressive pitches, the Pittsburgh Pirates found their offense.
The Pirates, limited to one hit in seven innings by Glavine, scored seven runs in the eighth and then held on for a 7-6 win over the Mets on Friday night.
"It was awfully weird," Pirates manager Lloyd McClendon said. "For seven innings it was a pitchers duel and then all heck broke loose in the eighth for both teams."
Kip Wells (2-1) countered Glavine, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one. He got the win after the Pirates outburst in the eighth.
"That's why you play the whole nine innings," Wells said.
Shoulder bothered him
Glavine was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh because he had tightness in his shoulder. But he wasn't too concerned about the injury.
"At my age there is a certain amount of pain every time you got out there," he said. "But after the sixth inning (the shoulder) tightened and it felt like it was a lot more laborious in that seventh inning than it was in the other innings."
Trailing 2-0 heading into the eighth, the Pirates went ahead 3-2 on Jack Wilson's run-scoring single. Jason Kendall was then hit by a pitch from David Weathers with the bases loaded forcing in another run and Raul Mondesi singled to make it 5-2. Rob Mackowiak added a sacrifice fly and Craig Wilson an RBI grounder to make it 7-2.
Mike Cameron hit an RBI double and pinch-hitter Eric Valent added a three-run homer off reliever Solomon Torres in New York's half.
"It was a night when the bullpen couldn't get it done," Mets manager Art Howe said.
Jose Mesa got the final three outs for his fourth save.
Ricky Gutierrez gave the Mets a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run single. And that was all the help Glavine needed. He walked only one before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. Glavine retired the first 10 batters he faced before Jack Wilson singled to center with one out in the fourth.
Orber Moreno (0-1) started the eighth for the Mets and gave up hits to the only three Pirates he faced, Craig Wilson, Abraham Nunez and Jose Castillo.
Castillo's hit scored Wilson and brought on reliever Mike Stanton who walked pinch-hitter Bobby Hill to load the bases. Tike Redman then rolled a soft grounder toward second for an infield single that scored Nunez with the tying run.
